Shenzhen reports 383 new HIV/AIDS cases

www.chinaview.cn 2005-11-17 10:14:37

BEIJING, Nov. 17 -- A total of 383 new HIV/AIDS cases were reported in Shenzhen in the first 10 months of this year, up 39 percent from the same period last year, officials from the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said yesterday.

At least 58 of the new cases developed full-fledged AIDS, and 10 people have died, they said.

"The disease is spreading rapidly in the city," said Feng Tiejian, a senior doctor with the Shenzhen CDC.

Nearly half of the new cases were reported in Longgang District, where the government carried out HIV/AIDS testing on addicts at the Longgang drug rehabilitation center for the first time this year.

Bao'an District, meanwhile, reported 111 new cases, accounting for 29 percent of the total. Bao'an and Longgang had more HIV/AIDS cases than other districts of Shenzhen because they have drug rehabilitation centers, prisons and a large migrant population, a report by the CDC says.

Drug addicts accounted for 55.9 percent of the new cases, followed by sexual transmission, which accounted for 31.9 percent. Sexual transmission is becoming an increasingly important channel for the spread of HIV/AIDS, said Feng.

Only 5.5 percent of the virus carriers hold permanent residence permits of Shenzhen, while the rest of them came from almost all over China, including two from Hong Kong.

"The huge number of migrant population imposes great challenge to the city's prevention of HIV/AIDS," said Feng, adding that most migrants were sexually active but with limited education.

The CDC is launching a major HIV/AIDS public awareness drive on the eve of World AIDS Day, which falls on Dec. 1.

The campaign will include putting HIV/AIDS advertisements inside public toilets frequented by high-risk groups, offering HIV/AIDS classes to workers of public venues, spreading the message of safe sex, and organizing donations for HIV/AIDS carriers.

Feng also urged people to avoid visiting unlicensed clinics, saying that contaminated medical equipment could spread HIV/AIDS.

"At the licensed hospitals in Shenzhen, medical equipments are thoroughly disinfected," he said.

A patient who recently sought treatment at a well-known Shanghai hospital for what he thought was an oral ulcer turned out to be a HIV carrier. HIV carriers often develop symptoms similar to oral ulcer.

LONDON - The global     HIV epidemic continues to expand, with more than 40 million people now estimated to have the     AIDS virus, but in some countries prevention efforts are finally starting to pay off, the     United Nations says.

AIDS has killed more than 25 million people since it was first recognized in 1981, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in history. An estimated 3.1 million people died from the virus last year and another 4.9 million people became infected, according to a U.N. update published Monday.

The deaths and new infection estimates were in line with those from last year, when the total number of people living with the virus was estimated at 39.4 million.

However, for the first time there is solid evidence that increased efforts to combat the disease over the last five years have led to fewer new infections in some places, said     UNAIDS chief Peter Piot.

Previously improvements had been seen in places such as Senegal, Uganda and Thailand, but those were rare exceptions.

"Now we have Kenya, several of the Caribbean countries and Zimbabwe with a decline," Piot said, adding that Zimbabwe is the first place in Southern Africa, the hardest-hit area, to show improvement.

These are all countries that have invested heavily in safe-sex campaigns and other prevention programs, with the result that prevalence of HIV among the young has declined.

"People are starting later with their first sexual intercourse, they are having fewer partners, there's more condom use," Piot said.

The epidemic also appears to be tapering off in other countries. "We see similar trends in countries in East Africa, but the evidence was not good enough to put in the report," he said.

The most dramatic drops in prevalence have been among pregnant women in urban Kenya, where in some areas the proportion of pregnant women infected plummeted from approximately 28 percent in 1999 to 9 percent in 2003.

In the Caribbean, declines are evident in Barbados, the Bahamas and Bermuda, Piot said.

In Zimbabwe HIV prevalence among pregnant women in the capital Harare has decreased from 35 percent in 1999 to 21 percent in 2004.

"I absolutely believe we are on a roll," added Dr. Jim Kim, HIV chief at the     World Health Organization. "Everyone is sort of jumping on the bandwagon. I think there's been a fundamental change, even in the past one year, in all the efforts in HIV."

There's a new energy, Kim said, and much of that comes from the recent availability of HIV treatment in the developing world.

About 1 million HIV patients in the developing world now are on treatment. While that is just a small fraction of the people needing treatment, the availability of drugs has meant that people see a point to getting tested for the virus, which is crucial for prevention efforts. About 300,000 deaths were avoided last year because of treatment, the report said.

"As much as possible, we've got to get that energy into prevention as well," Kim said.

So far this year the world has spent slightly more than $8 billion on tackling HIV in the developing world. That was a big increase from the $6 billion spent last year but was still far short of the need.

UNAIDS estimates that $9 billion will be spent next year but say $15 billion will be needed.

The epidemics continue to intensify in southern Africa. Growing epidemics are under way in Eastern Europe and in Central and East Asia. Five years ago, one in 10 new infections were in Asia. Today the number is one in four or five.

China, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam are facing significant increases. There are also alarming signs that Pakistan and Indonesia could be on the verge of serious epidemics, the report said.

Intravenous drug use and commercial sex are fueling the epidemic in Asia, where few countries are doing enough to inform people about the danger of such behavior, the report warned.

Worldwide, less than one in five people at risk of becoming infected with HIV has access to basic prevention services. Of people living with HIV only one in 10 has been tested and knows that he or she is infected.

1145 Postings, 7473 Tage Brokersince1994Calypte Completes Sale of Legacy Business

Calypte Completes Sale of Legacy Business
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore., Nov. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Calypte Biomedical Corporation (Amex: HIV) today announced that it has executed a definitive agreement with Maxim Biomedical, Inc. involving the sale of its legacy business. As a result of this transaction, Maxim has acquired Calypte's urine EIA, serum Western Blot and urine Western Blot HIV-1 in vitro diagnostic test business.

The sale of Calypte's legacy business is the final step in the restructuring plan approved by the Board of Directors in April 2005. The goal of the restructuring plan was to focus the Company's efforts on its rapid test and blood-based incidence test products by reducing the Company's labor force and overhead costs. As a result of this restructuring initiative Calypte and the completion of the sale to Maxim Biomedical, Calypte has been able to reduce its headcount by over 70%, from 63 personnel to fewer than 15. Largely as a result of these reductions in the Company's workforce the Company has reduced its operating expenses by approximately 50% from the 2004 burn rate of over $1 million per month and $12.8 million per year to approximately $6.5 million per year before new investments in China.

Mr. Roger I. Gale, Calypte's Chairman and CEO said, "The sale of the legacy business completes an important phase in the evolution of Calypte's business. We have made many hard decisions this year with the aim of making Calypte as efficient as possible as we prepare to launch our rapid test products on a worldwide basis. The completion of the asset sale to Maxim should allow the Company to focus its future on what we believe to be a unique opportunity in the rapid HIV diagnostic field. I hope to be able to update all stockholders in the near future and discuss further details of our progress and our near term and long term goals."

Forward-looking statements

The company cautions that its current expectations in this release concerning the benefits of the disposition of assets to Maxim Biomedical, Inc., including the company's plans, objectives, expectations and intentions are forward-looking statements, and actual results could differ materially from current expectations due to a number of factors, including: the company's ability to commercialize its rapid test products in international markets; the company's ability to obtain governmental approval for its products in the various jurisdictions in which it plans to commercialize its products; the company's ability to access the capital markets at attractive rates and terms to fund its operations and future growth; the success of the company's marketing efforts; and the company's ability to execute on its strategic and operating plans.

A discussion of these and other factors can be found in Calypte's annual report and other reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, including, but not limited to, Calypte's report on Form 10-KSB/A (No.2) for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2004.

About Calypte Biomedical:

Calypte Biomedical Corporation is a US-based healthcare company focused on the development and commercialization of diagnostic testing products for the detection of sexually transmitted diseases. Calypte specializes in novel tests such as the HIV-1 BED Incidence EIA and is engaged in developing and commercializing new diagnostic test products for the rapid detection of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, several of which do not require blood samples. Calypte believes that there is a significant need for rapid detection of such diseases globally to control their proliferation, particularly in lesser-developed countries, which lack the medical infrastructure to support laboratory-based testing. Calypte believes that testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infectious diseases may make important contributions to public health, and could increase the likelihood of treating those with undetected HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.
