As close to confirmation as I can find.
Domino Foods, the marketing arm of American Sugar Refining, owned by the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida in Belle Glade, and Florida Crystals Corp. in West Palm Beach, recently announced a collaboration with a stevia producer and a flavoring company.
New Jersey-based Domino Foods, stevia supplier Sunwin International, based in Qufu, China, and Wild Flavors, based in Zug, Switzerland, are teaming up to make natural sweeteners that include cane sugar, rice, malt and stevia.
"We have been working with Wild and Sunwin on a potential retail product that we will be producing this fall, a sugar-stevia blend that is lower in calories than straight sugar," said Brian O'Malley, president and CEO of Domino Foods.
"There is a trend out there for reduced calorie, reduced sugar products," O'Malley said.
It's not the company's first foray outside of pure sugar products. Domino already manufactures some artificial sweeteners, including a saccharine-based product similar to Sweet'N Low and an aspartame-based sweetener similar to Equal, as well as a sweetener that is similar to Splenda, which contains sucralose.
Domino is keeping the name of its new stevia-containing product secret for now, O'Malley said.
"It is not taking the place of sugar. It is offering some customers who want a lower-calorie option, an option," he said. |
