In the year since ‘Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles: The Road Ahead’ was first published there has been a continuous stream of announcements and developments as automakers and countries prepare for the market introduction of FCEV. Fuel Cell Today had previously released a ‘Turns in the Road’ update to the report six months after its publication and today publishes an updated and extended addendum.
The update covers significant developments from the last six months, including: the launch of two new national hydrogen infrastructure feasibility programmes; proposed legislation to aid hydrogen station construction in several areas; and the delivery of the first series-produced fuel cell electric vehicles.
The addendum can be found on pages 21–24 of ‘Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles: The Road Ahead’.

Fuel cell manufacturers have worked hard for many years to reduce the cost and increase the durability of their systems in order to successfully commercialise their products. Early adopters have embraced the technology and in a large number of industrial applications fuel cells are becoming an established technology option; but what is being done to educate and prepare the general public for wider product launches? The consumer market is undoubtedly more difficult to engage with than the industrial sector, and although some work has been undertaken to promote fuel cell technology to the general public, much more is needed.
The largest commercial rollout of fuel cells to the general public to date has been under the Ene-Farm scheme in Japan. Here a number of fuel cell manufacturers and gas utilities have grouped together under a single brand to provide a domestic energy solution for customers. Selling a solution and not a fuel cell is an important approach, and one that others around the world are beginning to adopt. This approach has been successful in Japan and the public recognises the brand and knows the principle behind what the Ene-Farm residential combined heat and power (CHP) systems do, but those members of the public we have spoken to that know the brand do not necessarily know what a fuel cell is. Nor should they really, as we happily drive our cars and heat our homes but how many of us could explain how the Otto Cycle governs the operation of internal combustion engines? Or discuss the limitations of heat engines as defined by the Carnot Cycle?
The Ene-Farm scheme has steadily grown since its beginnings as a small demonstration program ten years ago and is now selling around 50,000 systems per year. Due to continued development the fuel cell systems have been optimised, reducing their size and the number of individual components. Costs have steadily decreased, also aided by the economies of scale of selling in large numbers. This has meant that financial support from the government can steadily be reduced and it is hoped this can be phased out altogether over the next few years allowing the technology to sell unsubsidised.
Hopefully as the current tranche of European demonstration programmes for residential CHP fuel cells, such as Callux and Ene.Field, conclude and commercial sales of fuel cell CHP systems commence in Europe, the market will reach a similar level of maturity as it has done in Japan and customers will buy products based upon cost, efficiency and environmental impact (if they are so inclined), without necessarily concerning themselves with the technology contained within. A number of the Japanese fuel cell manufacturers are partnering with European companies to develop products for the European market, but it will take time before the market here grows to a similar size as that in Japan.
Outside of the Japanese Ene-Farm scheme, the majority of public outreach projects for fuel cells have centred on the automotive industry. Initiatives such as the California Fuel Cell Partnership, General Motors’ Project Driveway, the Mercedes-Benz World Drive, and the European Hydrogen Road Tour have raised the profile of fuel cell vehicles for short periods of time, but since the vehicles are not yet available for the public to purchase, sustained marketing efforts have not begun in earnest. All of the initiatives mentioned above have either placed vehicles into the hands of consumers, or allowed the public to see, and often drive, fuel cell electric vehicles. This is important because people will need to be familiarised with the new technology, experience the benefits, and understand they have nothing to fear from it.
Many urban myths still exist among members of the public surrounding fuel cells, and it is common to hear quotes such as: “the technology is ten years away”; “isn’t it a hydrogen bomb?” But for those who have used the technology, the response is the polar opposite with statements like: “awesome“, “quiet”, and “I love it, I want some more of it.”
Until such time as fuel cells are widely available to the public there is limited benefit in spending large sums of money on advertising, but public awareness can be raised through more informal channels such as the light-hearted viral advertisements for fuel cell vehicles published online by Honda, and through outreach groups such as the Clean Energy Partnership (video 1, video 2). I have only ever seen one television commercial which had a fuel cell vehicle in it, which was Honda’s updated Impossible Dream commercial featuring its FCX Clarity, although it was a brief cameo! Daimler’s invisible car project was a fun and unique way to show off the technology on the streets of Germany, making a car that is ‘invisible to the environment’ invisible to the public, and familiarising the public with the technology before the market introduction of fuel cell vehicles in the country.
As the date for the commercialisation of fuel cell vehicles draws nearer we will almost inevitably see a lot more advertising from automotive companies, keen to develop interest in the vehicles. This date is not too far away, and Toyota is expected to unveil the production model for its fuel cell vehicle at the 2013 Tokyo motor show later this year.
Hyundai Motors has already begun serial production of its ix35 Fuel Cell and expects to manufacture 1,000 vehicles up to 2015, and then 10,000 units from that year in line with consumer demand. It recently launched a UK website dedicated to its ix35 Fuel Cell vehicle containing a wealth of images showing the car driving past landmarks in London. The site also includes a history of Hyundai’s involvement in developing fuel cells and video interviews with Deputy Mayor for Business and Enterprise, Kit Malthouse, who is an outspoken supporter of hydrogen fuel cell technology and Chair of the London Hydrogen Partnership. Five of the vehicles are to be delivered to London imminently.
In summary, public outreach is very important when introducing any new product, but to truly make an impact the fuel cell products themselves must be available. Thankfully we are now at that stage, and we expect to see a lot more promotional activity in the coming months and years.

There has been a spurt in shipments of Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP)’s ElectraGenTM Telecom Back-up Power systems. There are two distinct reasons that are driving this growth: there is an increase in demand for back-up power for daily and regular power outages in several markets that have very unreliable electricity grids, and markets that have reliable grids but get affected by extreme weather (a condition which leads to extended power outages). In comparison to legacy diesel and battery generator solutions, the former are more reliable and efficient over longer durations. They are in use at over 2,000 sites and their efficacy has been proven there.

A large number of fuel cell systems are being ordered as well as installed in markets that have unreliable grids. For example, over the last 10 months, Ballard shipped over 200 ElectraGenTM systems to Indonesia and South Africa. In areas such as these, unreliable grid conditions lead to frequent and extended outages. Telecom operators in these markets require extended-duration backup power to keep their systems operational.

The electrochemical reactions that take place inside fuel cells and generate electricity may provide an inexpensive way to remove carbon dioxide selectively from exhaust gases that are emitted by fossil-fuel power plants. These very same reactions may also concentrate the CO2 and allow it to be stocked underground. It would also be possible to use the fuel cell to generate electricity, which can provide revenue to actually offset its cost.

Another company that is doing extremely well in the fuel cell market is FuelCell Energy, Inc (NASDAQ: FCEL). Just last week the company reported a marked increase in service and product revenues in the Q2. The company has an order for 10 fuel cells to power Bridgeport’s fuel cell park and the first two of these cells were delivered in the second quarter. This particular project is the second largest similar park on the planet. The first is also a FCEL project in South Korea. The demand from these two projects has resulted in a 25% hike in production at the company’s Torrington facility.

In the quarter that ended 30 April, there was an increase of 75% in sales including that of fuel cells, technology licenses, and services. Revenues touched $42.4 million. In comparison to this, FuelCell Energy reported $24.2 million in revenue in the same quarter of 2012. The company is very positive about its projections and is sure that this upward trend in the fuel cell industry will continue.

After disappointing so many high hopes more than a decade ago, Ballard Power Systems Inc. is a stock many investors would like to forget.

Yet, the fuel cell maker is once again drawing interest as its share price rises to levels not seen in a couple of years.

Ballard shares have risen by about 17 per cent in the last month and more than 240 per cent since the start of the year, buoyed by renewed interest in the alternative energy sector.

On Wednesday, shares of the company, based in Burnaby, B.C., rose 11 per cent on more than double the average daily volume over the past three months, before closing up 4 per cent to $2.13 on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

While that’s a far cry from when Ballard traded near $200 in 2000, the company is a much different enterprise today.

Ballard no longer touts a grandiose vision of trying to put fuel cells in every vehicle.

Instead, it’s focused on selling the technology for such commercial uses as backup power systems, forklifts and buses.

“If you got back to the Ballard dream 10, 12, 15 years ago, it was a dream,” chief executive John Sheridan said in an interview on Wednesday.

“Our world now is to say ‘Don’t invest in a dream, invest in commercial realities.’”

He points to recently signed deals for telecom backup systems in high-growth markets in Asia, as well as an agreement to develop fuel cells for use in powering demonstration cars for Volkswagen.

The VW contract is a four-year deal valued at $60-million to $100-million.

“The fuel cell story has been a slowly evolving story,” said Mr. Sheridan. “It has been a tough challenge and it has been several years to make progress, but I think the tide has shifted.”

While Ballard’s recent run up is impressive, analysts caution investors not to jump in too quickly.

The company is still losing money, but narrowed its loss in the first quarter to $7.9-million (U.S.) or nine cents per share, down from $8.7-million or 10 cents per share a year earlier, while its revenues rose 22 per cent to $12.3-million.

“I don’t see them as a good value at the moment,” Jeffrey Osborne, an analyst at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co. in New York, said in an e-mail on Wednesday.

“The growth prospects have bounced around the past two years from Brazilian buses to telecom backup to a renewed interest from auto companies like Volkswagen. My key issue is I don’t see a sustained path to profitability for the company.”

He has a “hold” rating on the stock, advising investors in a recent note to take a “wait-and-see approach” to Ballard stock.

“We are encouraged by Ballard’s initial success in the telecom backup market, the fuel cell bus market globally, and materials handling space … However, it has been a bumpy ride in recent quarters,” Mr. Osborne said.

Ballard’s share price may be getting a lift from other clean tech companies that have announced positive developments in recent weeks.

Bloom Energy, a privately held California-based firm, is providing fuel cells to power some of Verizon Communication’s facilities, while Mississauga-based Hydrogenics Corp. was recently awarded a contract for a fuelling station in Italy.

Nasdaq-traded Hydrogenics was up 3 per cent on Wednesday and has jumped 92 per cent so far this year, while Connecticut-based FuelCell Energy Inc. was also up 2 per cent Wednesday and has increased 36 per cent year-to-date.

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) has published a new paper entitled "Action for Roads: A network for the 21st century". The paper sets out the UK Government"s long-term ambition for the country"s roads both in terms of building and maintaining the network and also in ensuring the UK is a world leader in the deployment of ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs).
Fuel cells and hydrogen form an integral part of this strategy, with the report stating "As technology develops, ultra-low emission vehicles (ULEVs), including pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell electric vehicles, will play an increasing role in the way we travel. These vehicles are now starting to come onto the market in significant numbers, and in the coming decade will become a common sight."
On the topic of building a hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, the report adds "An important part of managing the road network over the next thirty years will be preparing the infrastructure for a shift to these new types of vehicle. In the years ahead there is likely to be a need for wide-reaching networks of rapid charge-points and hydrogen refuelling stations. The expansion of such infrastructure across the strategic road network will encourage consumer adoption of ULEVs. Whilst much of the investment is likely to come from the private sector, there may well be a role for government in supporting this in the early years – as demonstrated by the recent announcement of £37 million of government funding for plug-in vehicle charging infrastructure across the UK."
It is encouraging that the DfT recognises the role governments can play in financially supporting the initial rollout of hydrogen stations; something it will be aware of due to its participation in the on-going UKH2Mobility project.

The race among carmakers to develop vehicles powered by fuel cells is heating up. With no direct carbon dioxide emissions, electric automobiles with fuel cells are envisioned as the preeminent next-generation eco-car.

When will the world's major automakers be able to reduce the price of such a vehicle through mass production? Drivers around the world are keenly watching to see which carmaker will be the first to achieve an affordable fuel cell car.

Honda Motor Co. and General Motors Co. have agreed to jointly develop a fuel cell-powered vehicle. The Japanese and U.S. carmakers hope technical cooperation in such fields as developing the basic system for a fuel cell car will result in a jointly devised system fit for practical use as early as 2020.

The Honda-GM tie-up marks a change in their respective strategies for developing fuel cell electric vehicles. The two corporations have been separately working to develop such automobiles in recent years. Their alliance can be seen as an attempt to reduce the otherwise massive financial burden of developing fuel cell cars, while also completing the development project in a shorter period.

The motive behind their decision is a desire not to fall behind alliances formed by their rivals in developing fuel cell vehicles. Toyota Motor Corp. and BMW AG have signed an accord on joint development. Nissan Motor Co. has also said it will carry out a similar project with Renault SA, Daimler AG and Ford Motor Co. The

Toyota-BMW tie-up aims at mass production in 2020, while the latter group hopes to reach a similar goal in 2017.
All this means the development race will be bitterly fought by carmakers around the world, including South Korean and Chinese competitors and other corporations unrelated to the Japanese, U.S. and European manufacturers.

The fuel cell vehicle is powered by a motor run by electricity generated through a hydrogen-oxygen reaction. It is comparable to an electric vehicle (EV) in that neither automobile emits carbon dioxide.

Another advantage the fuel cell car offers is mileage. A hydrogen refill for a fuel cell vehicle enables a 500-kilometer drive, nearly twice the range of an EV car. Moreover, refueling takes only three minutes.

About 10 years ago, fuel cell cars were priced at a hefty 100 million yen (about $1 million) per unit. Although prices have fallen sharply, a fuel cell vehicle still carries a price tag of about 10 million yen today.

Toyota and Honda are seeking to lower the price to 5 million yen or so. An important challenge facing each car manufacturer is reducing the price through technical innovation. This task also must be complemented by efforts to ensure the safety of such vehicles.

Another key task is to expedite efforts to build more hydrogen stations. Companies in the oil and other industries are planning to set up 100 stations nationwide by the end of 2015. However, that would be too few to encourage the spread of fuel cell car use.

The government's growth strategy includes a plan to reconsider regulations with regard to the installation of hydrogen stations. It is essential for the government to further support the efforts of related businesses to spread such facilities.

As circumstances stand today, hybrid vehicles (HVs) have become a common choice for ecologically friendly vehicles. The race to develop hybrid cars, which combine an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, has been led by Toyota and Honda. The situation contrasts with the slow progress in the spread of EVs, partly due to the short distance covered by such automobiles for each recharge.

We hope Japanese automakers will strive to improve the performance of HVs and EVs while at the same time stepping up efforts to develop fuel cell vehicles, a move that will provide consumers with more choices for an eco-car purchase. If they can lead the development race, it would do much to shore up Japan's industrial competitiveness in the global market.

Werde Heute mal mein SL auf 1,52 setzen.
Könnte Grün werden in den USA!
Der Dax erholt sich auch ein wenig!

Die letzten Tag ist es ja ganz gut gelaufen.
Vielleicht gibt es erstmal Gewinnmitnahmen.

in den USA kurz vor Handelschluss nochmal kräftig gestiegen??
Nachbörslich geht ja ein wenig nach  unten.

 und unterwegs in Richtung 52 Wo Hoch. Kann sein, dass es am 1. August bei den Q2 Zahlen guten Nachrichten gibt und sich so manch Insider schon einmal eindeckt. Und ich Depp hatte meinen Bestand schon etwas gelichtet und in Richtung FuelCell Energy umgeschichtet. da muss ich wohl oder übel noch mal nachkaufen - auch wenn die Aktie bereits einiges gestiegen ist.

steht ja alles auf kaufen.
Ich habe mein SL auf 1.53 angezogen.
Laut der Webseite gibt es bei 2,02 Dollar eine Unterstützung.

Ich hoffe das wir weiter steigen. Aber man weis ja nie!
Mal schaun wo die Reise Heute hingeht.
Neuigkeiten gibt es ja keine. ( habe keine gefunden!! )
