Notably Viber itself is said to have over 1 billion users, 45 million of which are active in Russia every month. The app isn’t leading the market in the US and Western Europe, but is said to dominate the VoIP landscape in Eastern Europe and Russia, one of its top markets.
Per Zephrin Lasker, head of the company’s e-commerce venture, the company also plans on launching an e-commerce platform in Russia in the fourth quarter of this year, a move that will presumably help bolster Rakuten Coin’s adoption.

(Rakuten Card) today announced the launch of the Rakuten Card Payment with Points, a service that allows Rakuten Card cardholders to use Rakuten Super Points in the payment of their Rakuten Card bills. The service will be launched on September 12, 2018, for payments starting on September 27, 2018.
With the Rakuten Card Payment with Points, by applying through the Rakuten e-NAVI page, Rakuten Card cardholders can use from 50 to a maximum of 500,000 Rakuten Super Points in the payment of their Rakuten Card bills. After application, the amount of Rakuten Super Points used will reflected on the Rakuten e-NAVI page in real time, allowing the cardholder to confirm the accurate amount of the bill straight away.
The company's biggest strength lies in the Rakuten Ichiba online marketplace's 90 million customers. Registered users are prompted to switch to the company's existing mobile service through various campaigns and the company envisions pitching benefits it is in a unique position to offer, such as using Rakuten Ichiba reward points for mobile phone bill payments.
Rakuten Ichiba is reported to have more female shoppers than Amazon Japan and other e-commerce sites, and the company hopes housewives, who often hold the purse strings in Japanese households, will shift en masse to the new carrier.
