On the move . The business magazine about net mobile
Anyone who thinks that mobile phones are just for telephoning other people has seriously missed the point. The industry‘s visionaries see the mobile phone as an interface through which an ever-increasing range of multimedia services can be accessed. Some of those services are already here - many more are on the way. net mobile AG is one of the companies whose imaginative products are fuelling the added value business that is pushing up the profitability of mobile phones. net mobile AG specialises in the provision of value added services to the mobile phone industry. "We deliver every kind of content imaginable via every possible technical route. Our solutions are cost-effective, fast and can be received by every kind of mobile device,” says CEO Theodor Niehues. The mobile phone sector has, until now, grown rapidly on the back of the expanding number of users. With the market reaching saturation point, new phones must attract customers through new and enhanced applications and services. Entertainment and information servises are at the vanguard of the mobile network providers‘ strategy. With its extensive range of mobile services, net mobile is the ideal partner for the leading European network operators.
net mobile is the only company in Germany to provide integrated Multi-Channel-Communication made up of added value data services such as SMS, WAP, MMS and i -mode, speech applications, Internet and a multitude of micropayment solutions. It is one of the few companies able to offer a Premium SMS service. Customers of this service can offer end users the possibility of accessing pay services via an easily remembered five-figure number. This includes services such as LiveChat and Televoting. Micropayment allows users to pay for services such as the placing of a small ad in a newspaper by sending Premium SMS. The service is simple to use and the cost of the advertisement is billed directly to the user‘s mobile phone account. Premium SMS services are currently offered in the range between EUR 0,29 and EUR 3,00, making them a low-risk and convenient option. Mobile entertainment services form the core of net mobile‘s product range as the network operators attempt to target the "gameboy generation". The company has negotiated contracts with more than twelve mobile network operators in eight European countries to supply Java games to mobile customers. Through these deals, net mobile‘s range of games are available to users in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Great Britain and Belgium. "Games are the proof that mobile phones are increasingly being seen and used as an entertainment accessory. With our outstanding portfolio of games, we have already adopted a leading position in the European market," says Mr.Niehues. The games on offer are a real step forward from the integrated games offered on earlier phones. The latest generation of mobile phones feature colour displays and the possibility of downloading software programmes J2ME - Java to Microedition - makes it possible to download specific software and install it on the handset. The fastest growing segment using this technology is mobile gaming. net mobile has negotiated licence deals with branded games and is able to offer a wide range of sophisticated and popular games for download. Despite the overall success of the mobile phone industry, some painful lessons have had to be learned along the way. Notably, the failure of the first generation of WAP mobile phones has shown that end users are not interested merely in technology for its own sake. They want a concrete benefit from that technology. This is one of the strengths of net mobile. It has tailored its services to focus on customer benefits, both direct an indirect, instead of technology. "Despite some hiccups, the mobile phone industry is bullish regarding the future. We firmly believe that added value services are the future and that these will become as commonplace as sending SMS messages is today," says CPO Kai Markus Kulas. net mobile was founded in October 2000 and is a subsidiary of the Cologne-based Net AG. It offers a unique combination of technology and content, and is a pioneer in many areas. The company‘s customers and partners include such industry heavyweights as Vodafone, e-plus, Hutchison, Arcor, 02, Time Warner and Mobilcom Austria. Its growth has been phenomenal and it is currently expanding at a rate of 20 to 30% each month. Financially, the subsidiary is in extremely good shape. "In April, we concluded a deal with strategic investment partners Wellington Partners and Shamrock Holdings, which will provide the cash injection to finance our future growth. We are currently planning to extend our activities in Europe and in Asia," concludes Mr. Niehues.
