„Bets on any US rate hike next year fall to 20% A reading of the FedWatch tool on Wednesday showed investors downgraded significantly the outlook for interest rate increases expected from the United States Federal Reserve in 2019. Following a slowdown in several sectors of the economy, as registered by statistics and industry surveys, and an outburst of stock market volatility, the central bank lowered its projection to two quarter-point increases from three at its meeting this month. However, futures prices measured by the CME indicate the market-perceived chances slumped to as low as one fifth for any move higher in the next 12 months, almost halving from one week before.
Most bets, 61%, targeted no change from the current range of 2.25% to 2.5% at 6:12 pm CET. The measure marked a 22% chance for just one hike and 3.7% for more. Conversely, 12.7% even showed a decline by 0.25 percentage points and a marginal 0.6% was for two cuts.
When yields on US Treasuries rise, which is expected with Fed's interest rate increases, investors are more inclined to opt for the relatively safer asset class than stocks, and vice versa.“ |
