was nun? any ideas bitte?!

Are You Reeling in the Years?

March 23rd, 2011 · No Comments

Those commendable souls who frequent this space may have noticed Microkhan’s recent obsession with Papua New Guinea.  This is by accident more than design, I assure you; the endlessly  fascinating linchpin of Oceania simply has a lot going on these days, to  the point that it has become a topic of much conversation in America’s halls of power.

Expect Papua New Guinea’s name to become ever-more prominent in  Western circles, due to the possibility that the long-shuttered Panguna  copper mine on the island of Bougainville may finally be reopening.  One of the richest mines in the world in terms of reserves, Panguna  closed down 22 years ago, amidst a supremely violent conflict between a  Bougainville liberation movement and the PNG government. Now that  conflict has simmered down, and key power players on the island seem  willing to make peace in exchange for a cut of the mine’s future  revenues. Needless to say, both the U.S. and China are keenly interested  in this development, as they battle each other to be first in line for  the world’s mineral wealth.

But Panguna’s reopening is no foregone conclusion, as there are  remnants of Bougainville’s insurgency who are unlikely to get on board  with whatever plan emerges. Chief among these is Noah Musingku, who calls himself King David Peii II and clams to rule a royal kingdom on Bougainville. Though commonly dismissed as a con artist,  Musingku strikes me as something more irrational—a man who, though  certainly interested in bilking investors out of money, earnestly  believes he can reinvent Bougainville as some sort of utopia. Exhibit A  in this lunacy is his ongoing effort to get Bougainville to ditch the  Grigorian calendar in favor of one of his own design. As he explained in a speech last year:

Let me summarize my short speech by giving a brief  explanation of the new U-Vistract calendar system. Many of you still do  not seem to understand our calendar system although we are already in  the midst of its third phase. The names for the 12 months were taken  directly from the Book of Revelations Chapter 21. There are 12  foundational stones of the New Jerusalem City. The first month is  Jasper, second is Sapphire, third is Agate, fourth is Emerald, fifth is  Onyx, sixth is Carnellian, seventh is Quartz, eighth is Beryl, ninth is  Topaz, tenth is Chalcedony, eleventh is Turquoise, and twelfth is  Amethyst.

The first day (Lightday) falls on Wednesday of the conventional  calendar. Second day (Skyday) falls on Thursday; third day (Plantsday)  falls on Friday; fourth day (Solarday) falls on Saturday; fifth day  (falls on Sunday; sixth day falls on Monday; seventh day (Restday) falls  on Tuesday…

The UV calendar starts in the month of Jasper (July). Here in Siwai  district where the UV system originated/is headquartered, the word  ‘year’ is called ‘Moi‘ in our local tongue. Eg. If you are 30 years of  age you are said to have ’30 Moi ‘. This year is 2010 AD. In the Siwai  /Motuna language we would say “this Moi is 2010 AD”. The word for Moi is  derived from the Siwai word for “Galip Nut” tree which bears fruit  every year in June/July depicting a new year. A year or Moi in  Siwai/Bougainville therefore, begins in the month of July (Jasper) and  ends in the month of Amethyst (June).

You can download the whole calendar here,  if you’re so inclined. Suffice to say, rulers who have attempted to  make arbitrary changes to the calendar have not fared particularly well  over the long haul. I’m thinking of the folks behind the French Republican Calendar and, more recently, the revolting Turkmenbashi.  A wise man accepts that certain innovations have lasted for a reason,  even if said innovations were created by a detested “other.” Plus the  small psychological benefits of showing the world your mastery over time  surely pale in comparison to the drawbacks of being out of temporal  sync with every source of capital on the planet.

In any event, have a nice Lightday today, which I believe falls in the month of Chalcedony.

449 Postings, 6675 Tage bockaufbocMine Landowners and ABG reconcile

LEADERS of the Panguna landowners Association (PLOA) and the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) have resolved to work together in handling the Panguna mine issues.
This pledge was sealed with a handshake between both parties and witnessed by the media last Friday in Buka town, Bougainville.
ABG President John Momis expressed his gratitude to the representatives of the lease holding groups of Panguna and said he was grateful for the initiative taken by PLOA to iron out differences and misunderstandings between both parties as a lead-up to the reconciliation ceremony.
Momis said when all parties were happy to work together, “then the common goal has already been achieved”.
“That is why we have to work together to make that linkage of ownership and benefits.
“Let us not fear, let us move forward.”
He added that the revolution was over and all stakeholders were on the next phase which was the development phase.
PLOA interim chairman Chris Damana also urged the media to report accurately on events in the region, especially on the sensitive issue of re-opening Panguna mine and challenged parties to the reconciliation to be genuine in their move to reconcile.
He added that for the purpose of transparency, any parties including the national government and ABG who had business with PLOA must initially go through a process of talking with three identified PLOA liaison officers including Lawrence Daveona of Kuranbang clan.

Quelle: New Dawn on Bougainville, 22.3.2011

The US Ambassador to PNG Teddy Taylor and wife Antoinette Corbin Taylor arrived in Buka yesterday for a one day visit to Buka. He told a Press Conference at the Buka airport that his brief visit to Buka was to see for himself what was happening on Bougainville in terms of development after the Bougainville conflict.

He said he was to have travelled from Buka to Kavieng but due to the Kavieng airport closer they will now visit the West New Britain Province.

Whilst in Buka the Ambassador had a courtesy call to the ABG President John Momis and also met with women groups and the UNDP team on Bougainville. He left Buka today for Kimbe.

15676 Postings, 6680 Tage nekroCoppers rise slowed by Chinese oversupply

By Jack Farchy in London

Published: March 22 2011 18:09

It would be easy to assume the world was about to run out of copper.

The price of copper, a vital cog in the global economy found in almost every building and electrical circuit, has soared past previous records to hit $10,000 a tonne earlier this year. And predictions persist that it could rise above $13,000 by year end.

The increasingly apparent oversupply of copper in China, consumer of 40 per cent of the world’s supply, has made investors nervy. Prices are down $750 a tonne from their peak in February and last week dipped below $9,000 for the first time in three months. Some physical copper merchants are gloomier still, talking of a disconnect between “lacklustre” physical markets and their paper counterparts.

“Everyone has been looking at this as a very bullish year and the evidence so far has not supported it,” says Richard Wilson, chairman of Brook Hunt, a consultancy. “It requires a bit of a leap of faith.”

One reason for the availability of copper in Chinese ports is its widespread use as collateral in lending deals. It has become a cliche among traders that copper is no longer just an industrial metal – it is also a financial asset. Usually that is meant to refer to western speculators, but it is equally true in China.

Chinese companies – including some with no connection to the physical copper market, such as property developers – have imported copper to gain access to cash, as a means of bypassing China’s stringent caps on lending.

According to Yingxi Yu of Barclays Capital in Singapore, such companies use short-term letters of credit from local banks to import copper, which is then sold to generate cash for other investments.

These import financing deals have brought more copper into the Chinese market, exacerbating a period of weakness.

China’s economy may still be booming, leading to healthy industrial demand for the red metal. But, as copper prices spiked and credit availability in China has tightened, many companies have been cutting back on purchases, trimming their inventory levels.

At the same time, there has also been a surge in scrap copper in China driven by the record prices, further increasing supply.

Those factors have led to a sharp increase in stocks held in warehouses. Stocks in bonded warehouses, where the metal can be held before taxes have been paid, are estimated to have risen to about 600,000 tonnes from 300,000-400,000 tonnes in mid-December, while exchange inventories have jumped by about 160,000 tonnes – almost exclusively in China and nearby South Korea.

That oversupply, traders say, has seen shipments to China diverted to other parts of Asia, while some metal is being re-exported from China, as companies in import financing deals start to lose money.

But the state of the Chinese market – and so the outlook for copper prices – divides opinion sharply. Bulls argue that the weakness in China has been driven by short-term factors, such as a jump in scrap supply late last year and destocking by manufacturers. Therefore, they say, China will soon need to return to the market, drawing down stocks and reawakening concerns of an impending shortage. Bears retort that Chinese buyers are unlikely to buy in great quantities until prices drop a good deal further – and in the meantime they have plentiful stocks.

The disagreement has made the London Metal Exchange a battleground in recent weeks, with prominent hedge funds on either side of the trade.

The consensus still remains broadly bullish, with analysts arguing that the market could turn in the next couple of months. Max Layton, base metals analyst at Macquarie, says that “when credit does get easier, the snap back should be pretty dramatic”, meaning investors should see any price correction as “a great and long awaited, buying opportunity”.

In the bulls’ favour is the state of mine supply, which has seen a spate of setbacks, with production at four of the world’s top 12 mines set to drop significantly this year. CRU and Brook Hunt, two leading consultancies, see only minimal mine supply growth in 2010 and 2011 put together. “It’s a real possibility that mine production falls this year – we only need some unforeseen major disruption,” says Paul Robinson, head of non-ferrous metals at CRU.

Fundamentally, however, some believe that the unprecedented prices over the past few months may already have done their job, trimming demand and stimulating higher scrap supplies.

In that case, the large speculative investment in copper could withdraw en masse – leading to a potentially precipitous fall in prices. As one seasoned investor puts it: “A supercyle does not go in a straight line.”
