Partha Seetala is the President of the Cloud Business Unit at Rakuten Symphony and formerly the Founder and CEO at Robin.io. With more than 20 years' technology and product vision and expertise, he has taken multiple fully featured products from concept to market. He has conceived, designed, and built products in Scale-out Distributed Storage, File Systems, Networking, Distributed Systems, Big Data, and Information Analytics and the Containers/Kubernetes space.

I’m sure many of you have heard or are familiar with the term DevOps – a development and operations paradigm that integrates everything from planning to coding, deployment and operation. Next to DevOps there is MLOps, which takes the previous paradigm a significant step forward.

Strengthening communication

This year brands showed an even stronger interest in Rakuten Viber business messaging solutions as a tool to build connections with consumers in their favorite messaging app. In 2022, Rakuten Viber recorded:

A 87% growth in the number of new official Rakuten Viber business accounts created around the world compared to the number of newcomers in 2021. A substantial increase happened in the following countries: 825% in Hungary, 176% in Serbia, 158% in Bulgaria.
 

An overall 31% increase of Business Messages delivered. Notably, the biggest growth was in Hungary - by 433%, Algeria - by 286%, and in Nepal - by 128%.  

A 17% growth in Conversational Business Messages around the world (e.g. around-sales support, receiving feedback, and more): in Croatia the numbers grew by 171%, in Serbia by 91%, in the Philippines by 83%. The trend reveals that brands and users increasingly rely on real conversations (rather than the regular one-way messages), contributing to the rise of conversational commerce.

 

A 73% spike in Transactional Business Messages worldwide (order confirmations, delivery trackings, appointment reminders, one-time passwords, and more), showcasing the growing need for important notifications in brand-user interactions. The highest growth was shown in Hungary - by 729%, Philippines - by 603%, and Algeria - by 312%.  

An 11% growth in the number of Promotional Business Messages globally (e.g. special offers, discounts). The biggest increase was recorded in Hungary - by 218%, Nepal - by 122%, and Vietnam - by 107%.  

12B messages were sent and received in Rakuten Viber Chatbots globally, revealing the popularity of this automated tool for round-the-clock support.  

Rakuten Mobile Launches R&D into Advanced Edge Cloud Technology, with Funding Awarded by NICT

Tokyo, November 17, 2023 – Rakuten Mobile, Inc. today announced that its research and development (R&D) project into advanced edge cloud technologies for next-generation communications has been selected by Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) under their Beyond 5G (6G) Fund for Innovative Information and Communications Technology FY2023 Social Implementation and Overseas Development-oriented Strategic Program. As part of this funded project, from November 2023 Rakuten Mobile has started research and development on the advancement of edge platform functions for the next communication standard after 5G – "Beyond 5G."

Through this project, the company aims to provide stable services in the edge cloud by enhancing edge platform functions in response to the growing communication volume demanded by the Beyond 5G era.

The edge cloud has expanded to thousands of locations as communication areas have expanded throughout Japan, making centralized management of huge amounts of data in central data centers a challenge. In addition, edge data centers have limited physical space and cannot deploy ample resources for applications, so they need to be better coordinated with central data centers.

In this R&D project, Rakuten Mobile will work on enhancing coordination between edge data centers and central data centers, improving processing capacity in edge platforms, and developing technology for the integrated operation of containers and virtual machines. The company will also demonstrate the effectiveness of its technology in its own network by reducing latency and enhancing the performance of platforms for future multi-access edge computing use cases, in anticipation of Beyond 5G. Furthermore, by incorporating these technologies into the Symworld platform – a product deployed globally through Rakuten Mobile’s subsidiary, Rakuten Symphony, Inc., – telecom operators and enterprise businesses around the world will have access to these technologies.
