countries

Reuters•March 14, 2019
FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten plans to expand its video-on-demand streaming service to 42 European countries, partnering with leading smart TV makers to offer movies in high-definition at the push of a remote-control button.

Loss-making Rakuten TV says it has nearly 7 million pay-per-view customers in a dozen countries. With the wider European rollout, planned for this summer, it estimates that it will reach more than 30 million European households.

Roca estimated that Rakuten TV would be available on more than 80 percent of the smart TVs that occupy increasingly large amounts of wallspace in living rooms around Europe.

Roca declined to disclose Rakuten TV's financials but said that "loyal" viewers typically watched two movies a month. The firm's revenues grew by nearly 40 percent last year.

64411 Postings, 7524 Tage LibudaConference Q&A Summary

Q. What is the basis of your belief that the world’s first fully virtualized end-to-end
cloud-native network that you are building will be able to the millions of users you are
expecting?

A. (Amin)
Our telecommunications network features a cloud architecture foundation in which
elasticity is of utmost importance. We have carried out load tests under a variety of
conditions on the functions such as the packet core, radio access and IMS. Through
these tests, we were able to discover problems early and make fixes to the software.
Going forward, we will concentrate on testing the cloud foundation, and make efforts to
maintain the elasticity of the cloud foundation regardless of the workload. Also, while
other operators are shifting from IPv4 to IPv6, we already have one of the largest IPv6
blocks in Japan, so massive scaling up is a possibility. In addition, the backbone
infrastructure has a transport capacity of 100 Gbps, and we will operate multiple
datacenters. Due to the above points, we believe our network architecture is capable of
scaling up in all areas, and will be able to respond flexibly to the increases in traffic.

In other news, Rakuten Bank reported a 20+% increase in deposits during fiscal year 2018. Total deposits of JPY 2,481bn (USD 22.5bn) compare favorably with much touted European challenger banks like N26, which is reported to have reached just about EUR 1bn (USD 1.1bn) in customer balances. On the other hand, Marcus, the consumer financial services arm of investment bank Goldman Sachs, has reached USD 35bn in deposits since its inception, the fasted pace for any FinTech startup on record.

Ridehailing firm Lyft will make its Nasdaq debut as early as next week at a valuation of up to $23 billion, The Wall Street Journal reports. The business will reportedly price its shares at between $62 and $68 apiece, raising roughly $2 billion in the process.

San Francisco-based Lyft has raised a total of $5.1 billion in venture capital funding from key stakeholders including the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten, which boasts a 13 percent pre-IPO stake, plus General Motors (7.76 percent), Fidelity (7.1 percent), Andreessen Horowitz (6.25 percent) and Alphabet (5.3 percent). Early investors, like seed-stage venture capital firm Floodgate, also stand to reap big returns.
Lyft will trade under the ticker symbol “LYFT.”

18.03.19 07:45
