Byte and Switch Insider Homes in on ILM Hype
New Products, Focused on Database and Email Applications, Have Catalyzed the
Long-Hyped ILM Market, Finally Realizing Some of its Promises
NEW YORK, Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Data migration and archiving products focused on database and email applications have catalyzed the long-hyped ILM market, realizing the promises of more intelligently managed tiered storage, according to a new report from the subscription research service Byte and Switch Insider (http://www.byteandswitch.com/insider).
The report -- ILM: At the Crest of a Wave -- examines this small but growing group of products and compares them to the general ILM products that have targeted broader use in storage settings. Product characteristics reviewed in the report include OS and storage support; migration policy criteria; and pricing.
"A small group of software suppliers has given hope to ILM seekers," says the report's author, Byte and Switch Insider Senior Analyst Brett Mendel. "These products integrate tightly with the applications generating data, providing more in-depth knowledge of the data and more useful migration policies."
    Among the report's conclusions:

     * ILM products for database and email applications are leading the
charge, while ERP and CRM will fuel the next wave of adoption.
     * EMC and Veritas have relied on acquisition to establish themselves as
       the players to beat.
     * General ILM products focusing on unstructured file data have yet to
provide many of the benefits sought by enterprises.
     * Two privately held companies, OuterBay and Princeton Softech, have a
foothold in ILM for database applications.
ILM products for applications from the following vendors are discussed in this report: CommVault Systems Inc., EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC), OuterBay Technologies Inc., Princeton Softech Inc., Storage Technology Corp. (StorageTek) (NYSE: STK), and Veritas Software Corp. (Nasdaq: VRTS).
General ILM products from the following vendors are discussed in this report: Arkivio Inc., Atempo Inc., CommVault, EMC, IBM Corp. (NYSE: IBM), and Veritas.
ILM: At the Crest of a Wave is available as part of an annual subscription (12 monthly issues) to Byte and Switch Insider, priced at $1,350. Individual reports are available for $900.

Aber EMC stellt halt keine trendigen Endverbraucher-Produkte her, schade.

Acquisition to Expand EMC's Software Portfolio, Adds Key Technology for Event Automation and Real-Time Network Systems Management

EMC Corporation (EMC) , the world leader in information storage and management, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire SMARTS(R), Inc., for approximately $260 million in cash, subject to closing adjustments. SMARTS is a fast-growing, privately held technology leader in event automation and real-time network systems management software. SMARTS expects its fiscal 2004 revenues to be slightly more than $60 million. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2005, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, and is not expected to have a material impact to EPS for the full 2005 fiscal year.

A leader in the service-centric approach to network systems management, SMARTS' patented modeling and correlation technologies dynamically capture knowledge about the inter-relationships, behaviors and characteristics of any IT environment to be managed. SMARTS' InCharge(TM) software products automatically pinpoint root cause problems, calculate their impacts across technology domains, and present the logical action plan required to keep business services up and running. SMARTS InCharge is being used by the world's leading enterprises and service providers to increase availability and performance of mission-critical, revenue-generating business services, while significantly reducing operational costs.

Over time, SMARTS will enable EMC storage management software to intelligently correlate, determine root cause problems and present a plan of action for critical problems across the storage network. An important attribute of information lifecycle management (ILM) is the uninterrupted flow and movement of information. The health, well-being and management of the information network will serve as a cornerstone for any comprehensive ILM strategy.

Joe Tucci, EMC President and CEO, said, "This acquisition is about market expansion, innovative technology and growth. SMARTS represents a strategic acquisition for EMC in a complementary, growing market - network systems management. EMC is committed to dedicating the resources required to expand SMARTS' current market presence, while also applying their world-class modeling, correlation and root cause analysis technology to expand our lead in information and storage management."

Shaula Alexander-Yemini, SMARTS Founder and CEO, said, "This combination is a great fit, at the right time, for SMARTS and our customers. EMC and SMARTS share a vision for event automation and real-time network systems management and their increasing importance as the IT world becomes more complex, heterogeneous and dynamic. With the help of EMC, SMARTS now has at our disposal the resources to realize the full potential of our technology, and bring a broader set of products to a larger customer base much faster."

Chris Gahagan, Senior Vice President, EMC Software, said, "This acquisition not only expands EMC's software portfolio and market lead, but will play an important role in taking customers to the next level of storage management. As the convergence of data and storage networks continues, SMARTS extensible technology will enable EMC to take advanced management and real-time analysis capabilities developed for the data network and apply them across heterogeneous storage networks."

SMARTS technology can be deployed either stand-alone or integrated with existing systems management frameworks. SMARTS integrates with and enhances traditional systems management frameworks by adding automated, actionable intelligence.

Upon completion of the acquisition, SMARTS will be integrated into the EMC Software Group with a dedicated specialty sales force focused on selling SMARTS' products.

A Webcast beginning today at 8:30 a.m. (Eastern Time) at www.emc.com/announcement will be hosted by Howard Elias, EMC's Executive Vice President, Corporate Marketing and Office of Technology, and Shaula Alexander-Yemini, SMARTS Founder and CEO.

EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, today announced that its employees have donated toys, clothes and other gifts to more than 1,200 disadvantaged children who reside in surrounding communities. For three years, EMC has organized two holiday gift drives, The Snowman Project and Toys for Tots, during the months of November and December. These holiday gift drives offer employees the chance to ensure children in foster care or distressed homes receive gifts during the holiday season.

"EMC places a priority on strengthening our local communities in a number of ways," said Maureen Giffin, Senior HR Generalist. "During the holidays, we put a great deal of effort into children's charities. There are thousands of kids in surrounding towns that live in foster care or in distressed family situations. These gift donations are one way to ensure no child is forgotten. Ultimately, our goal is to help each of them have a bright and successful future."

As part of EMC's on-going commitment to strengthening local communities, EMC and its employees volunteer for and make in-kind donations to programs that improve the lives of disadvantaged children and their families. During the holidays, the company focuses its efforts on The Snowman project and Toys for Tots. The Snowman Project, a Department of Social Services (DSS) Kids Fund program, provides holiday gifts for specific children identified by the DSS who are in foster care or in distressed families serviced by DSS. Each participating employee donates wrapped gifts from his or her child's wish list. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program, which collects new, unwrapped toys and distributes these toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the local community.

9933 Postings, 8915 Tage bauwiGeduldprobe: Bear Stearns reiterated an "outperf."

Bear Stearns reiterated an "outperform" rating and $17 target price on EMC (nyse: EMC - news - people ), saying the software company's conservative 2005 guidance could drive earnings upside. The research firm said EMC's primary focus is on driving growth by taking share in the storage market as well as expanding its market opportunity in adjacent areas with acquisitions. At the same time, EMC is also "focused on expanding its operating margins to its stated target of high teens exiting 2005." Accordingly, EMC is keeping a tight control on expenses while trying to drive growth, Bear Stearns said. EMC has noted that acquisition focus is on software companies that expand its market opportunity and are easy to integrate. Bear Stearns said new high-end products from IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people ) and Hitachi (nyse: HIT - news - people ) haven't affected EMC and that EMC's new storage router is set for release by mid-2005. The research firm reiterated its 2005 pro-forma earnings-per-share estimate of 52 cents, versus EMC's guidance of 47 cents to 51 cents. For 2006, Bear Stearns estimates earnings of 62 cents per share. For the first quarter of 2005, the research firm is modeling earnings per share of 11 cents, versus EMC's guidance of 10 cents to 11 cents.

Der Euro macht wieder mächtig Druck und das sorgt natürlich auch für Kursschwankungen, aber EMC entwickelt sich nicht so, wie die Annalüstän vorhersagen.
