Bosch's SiC chips are made from SiC wafers with SiC epi layers deposited on the surface. There are following complex semiconductor fab processes to make the chips. The announcement did not say whether Bosch grow the epi layers itself, or it buys SiC wafers with epi layers already deposited. I suspect it is the latter. Some companies like CREE, Sumitomo etc. sells SiC wafers with epi layers and also make and sell SiC chips. Other companies like Infineon, ST Semiconductors, for example, make their own epiwafers and the chips, but they don't sell epi wafers. There are pure play foundries, like Epiworld, that sell SiC epiwafers only. Regardless who make the epi wafers, the more SiC chips are made, the more SiC reactors for making the epi layers would be needed. |
