--ý US House Panel To Examine Lehman Brothers Accounting
18:48
WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy (D., Ohio), a member of the House Financial Services Committee, said Wednesday that the committees chairman, Barney Frank (D., Mass.), has agreed to hold a hearing examining whether Lehman Brothers Holdings (LEHMQ) used accounting tricks to hide its debt from the public.
A recent report by a court-appointed bankruptcy examiner concluded that the failed investment bank routinely concealed $50 billion of debt using off-the-books transactions. Kilroy said she asked Frank to conduct a hearing into Lehmans conduct and that of its accountant, Ernst & Young.
Lehman Brothers played a shell game with their money, leaving the American taxpayer with the bill when the Wall Street firm eventually folded under the weight of its own fraudulent activities, Kilroy said in a statement Wednesday. Weve got to put a stop to the grossly fraudulent practices that lead to the collapse of Lehman and near collapse of our own economy.
A House Financial Services Committee spokeswoman said no date has been set yet for the hearing.
