“By expanding the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP) globally, Rakuten aims to evolve from a Japan-headquartered tech company to a global leader in telecom. Based on the fully virtualized cloud native 4G and 5G mobile network that Rakuten has built in Japan, RCP is being developed as a platform for mobile service providers and other telecom businesses,” the carrier said.

“By using RCP, customers can select a combination of the required functions for building a 4G or 5G network and the services to run on the network whenever they are needed as easily as using an app.”

Rakuten Inc., the e-commerce giant that is building out its mobile phone network in Japan to challenge the long-term incumbents, has embraced O-RAN for its 4G and 5G networks. Founder and CEO Hiroshi Mikitani told a conference in November that he aims to export its network technology overseas and sees its value "easily exceeding ¥1 trillion.”

The open model is also seen bolstering the negotiating position of carriers in contracts for 5G network build-outs, with telcos able to choose from a wide range of suppliers. It also provides opportunities to system integration providers, which Japanese firms excel at.

CONVENIENCE COMMERCE
‘Order for Pickup’ First-Timers: A Look into Pandemic-Inspired Behavior Shows More Consumers are Buying Online and Picking up in Store

by Rakuten Intelligence - October 02, 2020

As merchants continue to shift their business models and add contactless experiences to meet the changing demands of the COVID-19 era, ‘click and collect,’ or online ‘Order for Pickup,’ has not only become widely available, but increasingly more popular.

This change in consumer behavior has led to a historic rise in online Order for Pickup orders, with many trying it for the first time. From March through May alone, ‘click and collect’ order volume was up 202 percent, with almost 30 percent of all orders being driven by consumers who are new to using Order for Pickup services, or “first-timers”.

Rakuten Intelligence data uncovers who these first-time online Order for Pickup customers are in the COVID-19 era, and how the demographics of the ‘click and collect’ customer are evolving. We also turned to our sister company, Rakuten Ready, to get more insight into these trends, and how merchants are responding.

https://www.wallstreet-online.de/nachricht/...en-internet-silberpreis

Midland, Texas-based AST is building a network of satellites it calls “SpaceMobile,” designed to deliver broadband from space directly to consumer smartphones. Existing satellite networks require additional physical devices to connect to the service, such as Iridium’s mobile satellite phones or SpaceX’s Starlink user terminals.

“What we’re doing is launching a space-based satellite network that allows any phone — without any modification of hardware, software, apps, nothing — to be able to connect directly to satellites,” AST chairman and CEO Abel Avellan told CNBC.

“This will support true 5G broadband speed.”

Engineers Mint spoke to said that while Rakuten and Jio appear to be on the same track, their public messaging is different: Rakuten is clearly saying they are partnering and integrating, but Jio is claiming they are building all on their own. “Jio is integrating. They are optimising the cost which is a smart business move. But there are no technological breakthroughs," said an engineer on condition of anonymity.

To be fair, the complete Jio playbook will unravel in greater detail in the coming years. Industry insiders say that Jio’s announcement has boosted the momentum for self-reliance in telecom . With the alignment of geopolitical and business interests, this could be the moment the industry has been waiting for.

But NYU’s Panwar feels India needs to look ahead. “If India truly wants to get in the business, it needs to jump ahead to 6G and do R&D right now, and get international patents. 5G is over in terms of intellectual property," he said.

Japan's Rakuten hits 2m subscribers for mobile service

Industry newcomer says customer acquisition hasn't slowed despite price war

MASAAKI KUDO, Nikkei staff writerDecember 31, 2020 03:26 JST

TOKYO -- Japanese e-retailer Rakuten on Wednesday announced that it has received more than 2 million total applications for its mobile service since its full-scale commercial launch in April.

The company is a relative newcomer in Japan's mobile industry, long dominated by NTT Docomo, KDDI and SoftBank. It reached 1 million subscribers in late June.

Competition has since been increasing as more-established players cut rates under pressure from Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga for cheaper service. Still, Rakuten's mobile unit said its customer acquisition has not slackened.

The company is waiving its monthly fee of 2,980 yen ($29) for a full year for its first 3 million subscribers. But it was unable to reach its goal of crossing the 3 million mark by the end of 2020.

Rakuten's Open Ran is working since near a year, Jio's is only planning

"But an open 5G market with a clear backlash against China’s Huawei is a road to glory that no one wants to miss. Asian telecom giants are ensuring that they are not left far behind. Japanese tech giant, Rakuten has therefore collaborated closely with American technology conglomerates in order to replace Huawei.

Rakuten has come up with the idea of an “open” Radio Network Access (RAN) technology. The e-commerce giant has already delivered on its promise of cheaper rates in its 4G network. The Japanese tech major plans on using just one vendor to support its entire RAN.

Tareq Amin, Chief Technology Officer, Rakuten Mobile says, “It is a single vendor strategy per domain, which allows us to achieve an easier way of how we do systems integration, and the cost is remarkable when you start separating hardware from software.” This hardware-software separation is what makes an “open” RAN different from a traditional one, in which both the hardware and software come from the same supplier.

If he has to choose between Tokyo and Beijing, US-leader will choose Tokyo which gives Rakuten a definite advantage. But there is another angle to Rakuten. Airspan, a Florida-based American company is going to fulfil Rakuten’s hardware requirements, along with Japan’s NEC.

Software is anyway more important for the kind of technology that Rakuten wants to sell. Many of the companies partnering with Rakuten are American such as Cisco and Mavenir.. The US can easily associate the Japanese brand with ‘Buy American’.

The story of Jio, the digital platform of the Mukesh Ambani-led RIL isn’t much different. The biggest similarity being Tareq Amin himself. Amin who is now a key executive in Rakuten had earlier served as Senior Vice President of technology development at Reliance Jio. And therefore, we are not surprised by Jio’s vendor selections.

Jio is also partnering with Airspan, Cisco and Mavenir- all American companies. Similarly, Jio is also looking to cut network-related costs with the “open” RAN technology."
