Der Titel, Finnegans Wake, rührt von der irischen Ballade Finnegan’s Wake über den Baumeister Tim Finnegan her, der betrunken von einer Leiter fiel, dabei starb, aber bei seinem feuchtfröhlichen Leichenbegängnis (englisch wake), bei dem eine Flasche Whisky auf seinem Sarg zerbrach, wieder zum Leben erwachte.

Ein Mann aus Irland hat mit einer Botschaft aus dem Sarg für Gelächter bei seiner Beerdigung gesorgt. Die Trauergäste am Grab hörten plötzlich Klopfgeräusche aus dem Sarg und dann die Stimme des verstorbenen Shay Bradley: „Wo verdammt noch mal bin ich? Lasst mich hier raus. Es ist verdammt dunkel hier. Ist das der Priester, den ich höre? Hier ist Shay, ich bin in der Kiste!“
