24.07.2008 09:36 SGL to increase graphite electrode prices for second time since May
WIESBADEN, Germany (Thomson Financial) - SGL Group AG (News/Aktienkurs) . said it is lifting prices of graphite electrodes, its main product, for the second time since May, responding to spiraling costs of energy and transportation and of the feedstock needle coke.
SGL said in a statement that prices of 'regular size' electrodes, with a diameter between 14 inches and 24 inches, will rise to 6,190 euros per metric tonne in Europe, up 12.5 percent from 5,500 euros previously.
'Extra size' electrodes, with a diameter of 26 inches to 30 inches, will now cost 6,600 euros per metric tonne in Europe, up 13.8 percent from 5,800 euros previously.
In North and South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia excluding China, prices are rising by 11.9 percent to $9,600 per tonne of 'regular size' electrodes and by 13.3 percent to $10,250 per tonne of 'extra size' electrodes, SGL added.
The price hikes affect new contracts globally with immediate effect, it added.
The company's electrodes, which accounted for more than half of the group's 2007 sales, are built into steel companies' furnaces to help turn iron and scrap metal into steel.
