Sacramento-based Pacific Ethanol Inc., a producer and marketer of low-carbon renewable fuels, today reported a loss of $5.3 million in the third quarter ended Sept. 30. That was a slight improvement from a loss of $6.3 million in the third quarter of 2012. PEI said the most recent quarter financials included a $2.6 million non-cash loss related to debt extinguishments. Pacific Ethanol has been slowly recovering from a 2009 bankruptcy that cost the company control of its four production plants. This year, it has been paying on loans that enabled it to regain majority stakes in the plants. The company said net quarterly sales were $233.9 million, up from $215.9 million in the third quarter of 2012. PEI said the year-over-year increase was attributable to an increase in production gallons sold, slightly offset by a reduction in the average sales price per gallon. Neil Koehler, president and CEO, said the quarterly results “reflect an improved market environment and the positive impact of our increased ownership of the Pacific Ethanol plants over the year-ago period.” Through nine months, net sales totaled $693.1 million, up from $619.0 million in 2012. Year-to-date, PEI lost $10.3 million, compared with a loss of $14.5 million in the year-ago period.
