What is it? CellSpray® (cultured epithelial autograph spray suspension) is an autologous (from the patient's own skin) cellular suspension, which can be sprayed onto wound surfaces that require skin replacement. The epithelial cells are cultured from a small skin biopsy taken from the patient.
What is it for?
Partial, deep partial and full thickness burns Extensive scars that require recolouring and improved contouring. Reconstructive surgery Treatment of pigmentary changes CellSpray® has been developed for the treatment of wounds that are greater than 20% total body surface area i.e. back of two adult legs, such as major burns. It is also for use in patients with injuries whose skin may not grow well on its own such as the elderly or patients with other medical complications. CellSpray® can be used alone in partial thickness injuries, in combination with traditional mesh skin grafts in deep partial thickness injuries or in combination with Integra® and mesh skin grafts in full thickness injuries.
The choice of CellSpray® or CellSpray® XP depends on how soon the area needs to be grafted, the size of the available donor sites and the general health of the patient.
Benefits:
Speed of Delivery Treatment of large surface area wounds requires cell culturing of an autologous skin biopsy. Traditionally, cultured skin takes 14-21 days to grow.
C3 can grow skin cells for spraying on the wound with CellSpray® in as few as 5 days. This means the patient can be treated soon after injury, improving the chances for an optimal outcome.
This time saving is crucial, because to avoid significant scarring it is important to apply the skin graft within 10 days of injury. The biopsy for CellSpray® also requires minimal donor site tissue for culturing.
Ease of Use CellSpray® is easy to use because the cultured cells are sprayed on using a syringe with a unique nozzle activator.
CellSpray® can be rapidly and efficiently applied to large wounds, overcoming the costly and time-consuming application problems of traditional sheets of skin.
It can also reduce the difficulties of skin grafting complex contoured areas such as palms and soles.
Improved 'Take' The relatively immature pre-confluent cells in CellSpray® adhere well, ensuring a reliable 'take' and allowing rapid healing and optimal scar quality.
Cost The streamlined development processes used by C3, as well as the rapid healing time experienced by the patient, results in CellSpray® being quite cost-effective.
Post-Operative Care
C3 has developed specific techniques and dressing protocols for the application of CellSpray® and subsequent post-operative care. This includes:
appropriate use of custom made, hydrophobic fabric-lined pressure garments and development of an early mobilisation regime. |
