3656 Postings, 7333 Tage Bäcker33The Propagation of Hydrogen Stations

It is well known that from 2015 onwards automakers across the world will begin to bring fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) to market. However, these cars are of little use if a customer has nowhere to refuel. This chicken and egg problem of vehicles and infrastructure has plagued discussions of FCEV commercialisation since they began. Luckily, partners on both the vehicle and fuel supply side are now working to create a viable ecosystem into which FCEV can arrive and propagate.

The current wave of progress began in September 2009, when seven of the world’s largest automotive OEMs – Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai-Kia, Renault-Nissan, and Toyota – signed a joint letter of intent addressed to the oil and energy industries and government organisations. It signalled the OEMs’ intent to commercialise a significant number of fuel cell vehicles from 2015 and urged for the development of hydrogen infrastructure, primarily in Europe and especially in Germany, to allow for this market introduction.

A year and a half later in January 2011, the three major Japanese automakers – Honda, Nissan, and Toyota – signed a memorandum of understanding with ten Japanese oil and energy companies. It agreed three main points: that the automakers will continue to reduce manufacturing costs and popularise FCEV; that the automakers and fuel suppliers will work together to expand the introduction of FCEV and the hydrogen supply network, and that the hydrogen fuel suppliers will construct a network of approximately 100 hydrogen refuelling stations by 2015. These stations will be clustered in Japan’s four main metropolitan areas: Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka.

With 2015 now just two years away, what impact have these letters and memoranda had? How close are Europe, Japan, and the rest of the world to realising viable early markets for FCEV?

According to the LBST and TÜV SÜD operated information website H2stations.org, 27 new hydrogen stations were opened worldwide in 2012, bringing the total number of hydrogen stations in service to a total of 208 as of March 2013 – 80 in Europe, 49 in Asia, 76 in North America, and three elsewhere. A fifteen percent increase in hydrogen refuelling stations in the space of a year is indicative of an industry drive towards market preparation for FCEV. Of the 27 new stations, eight are in North America, three are in Asia, and sixteen are in Europe, of which five are in Germany. The European FCEV movement has been led by Germany, with invested parties largely represented in the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP). Three of the five new German stations are CEP stations, in Hamburg, Berlin, and Dusseldorf. In June 2012, the German Federal Transport Minister Peter Ramsauer together with industry partners Daimler, Linde, Air Products, Air Liquide and Total signed a letter of intent to increase the network of hydrogen stations in Germany to 50 by 2015, supported by €20 million in funding from the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Programme (NIP). According to H2stations.org, Germany currently has 14 public stations in operation and the country is on its way to achieving its goal. Once built, these 50 stations provide the skeleton infrastructure needed to support initial FCEV rollout across the nation. Elsewhere in Europe, Scandinavia is continuing to solidify its position as an important launch market for FCEV with contracts securing fifteen Hyundai ix35 FCEV in Copenhagen and two in Skåne, Sweden.

In early February 2013 the initial findings of the first phase of the government–industry UK H2Mobility project were revealed. The study sees ≤1.6 million FCEV on UK roads by 2030, with annual sales of more than 300,000. It further found that 10% of new car customers would be receptive to FCEV when first introduced and that an initial rollout of 65 hydrogen stations in heavily populated areas and along national trunk routes would provide sufficient coverage for these early vehicle sales. Hydrogen should be cost‐competitive with diesel immediately, with 60% lower CO2 emissions than diesel by 2020; as the fuel mix becomes more renewable this improves to 75% lower by 2030 and would be on course for 100% by 2050. As vehicle sales grow, the number of refuelling sites would increase to 1,150 by 2030; by that time 51% of the fuel mix should be coming from water electrolysis, contributing to an annual total vehicle CO2 emissions reduction of up to three million tonnes by FCEV in 2030. Furthermore, FCEV could have a UK market share of 30–50% by 2050.

Last month it was announced that a consortium led by Air Products will deliver at least one new 700 bar hydrogen station in London and upgrade the existing two to 700 bar, as well as the station at the nearby Millbrook Proving Ground. These will be complemented by a number of Hyundai ix35 FCEV and Revolve HICE vans. Dr Klaus Bonhoff, director of NOW GmbH, noted in an October 2012 presentation to the FCH‐JU that similar studies are being considered for the French and Swiss markets.

In Japan an industry grouping, HySUT, is coordinating infrastructure deployment. As of March 2013, H2stations.org lists 26 operational stations in Japan – a quarter of the way to the country’s 100 station target. A $50 million government subsidy is being made available to support the construction of new hydrogen stations in 2013. The subsidy will cover up to 50% of a station’s capital cost; HySUT states the current cost per station is in the region of $5 million, so the subsidy could support 20 new stations. If the subsidy continued at this rate, and presuming that the maximum number of applicable stations are built, then Japan would have 86 stations by the end of 2015. However, the per-station subsidy may reduce from 50%, with private companies picking up the deficit; this would put the 100 station target within reach. The commercial standard that the new stations are being built to allows for hydrogen pumps to be installed at existing stations, which may help with capital cost further; however a setback distance of eight metres from the roadside is still required unless blast fencing is installed. In January 2013 JX Nippon Oil & Energy Corp. announced plans to construct 40 stations by 2015 and Iwatani announced at the FC Expo in February 2013 that it would be building 20 by the same date; together the two companies will build 60 of the 74 stations needed to meet the 100 station target.

California continues to lead the USA in the adoption of FCEV. The Office of California Governor Edmund G. Brown published its ‘2013 Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Action Plan’ in February 2013, which includes a roadmap towards putting 1.5 million ZEV on Californian roads by 2025. It mandates that by 2015 major metropolitan areas in California are to be ‘ZEV ready’, including suitable funding for infrastructure for both FCEV and BEV/PHEV, as well as streamlined permitting. The plan incorporates the findings of the California Fuel Cell Partnership’s recent study, which suggests that 68 hydrogen stations would be needed for an initial launch of vehicles in 2015. This Californian mandate is an important step forward for the country as a whole: because the California Air Resources Board predates it, the US Clean Air Act allows California to determine its own air quality standards – other states may choose either federal standards or Californian standards, but not set their own. This allows willing states to adopt more progressive Californian standards, and this unique model could speed up FCEV adoption within the USA. A nationwide infrastructure feasibility study, H2USA, will launch soon following in the footsteps of existing projects in Germany and the UK.

The speed at which hydrogen infrastructure developments are materialising is becoming ever more rapid as we enter the penultimate year before the launch of the first commercial FCEV; if this trajectory continues viable launch markets for FCEV should be just around the corner.

genau so sehe ich die sache auch: As of may 1st we are already @ 70 MW production..... that's why I say magical era already started: we already more than doubled production in 3 years.
In 4th qrt of this year, could see already the hype-era for the stock, that is when I'm expecting - as mngm said - the production pace forwarding @ 80/90 MW

So, in my opinion, breakeven already in 1st 2014.... or before depending on how they report data (sound strange but it is so).

If you look only at chart and pps.... nobody knows for sure, but always keep in mind that PPshare does move BEFORE.

3656 Postings, 7333 Tage Bäcker33Market might be warming to fuel cells

DANBURY -- For decades, people have talked about the potential of fuel cells -- clean, highly efficient, quiet, relatively compact producers of energy.
Now there is increasing evidence of that potential. Fuel cells are working, and being built throughout the state, and the country.
"It's not the future,'' said Scott Samuelsen, director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California at Irvine. "It's already begun. It's something we can actually observe in real time.''
Fuel cell prices "have started to go down,'' said Joel Reinbold, director of the energy initiative at the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology. "They're safe and reliable. There's a premium today on energy efficiency and clean sources of energy. Fuel cells are a logical choice.''
There are two prominent fuel-cell projects in the area. At Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, a 400-kilowatt fuel cell built by UTC Power -- the United Technologies fuel cell subsidiary now owned by Oregon-based ClearEdge Power -- is set to power the university's Science Building, providing it with both heat and energy.
And in Bridgeport, Danbury-based FuelCell Energy Inc., is set to build a 15-megawatt fuel cell plant for Dominion, a Virginia-based utility. It is to be the largest fuel cell installation in North America, according to FuelCell Energy.
When the project is completed, Dominion plans to sell the electricity it produces -- enough to power 15,000 homes -- to Connecticut Light & Power Co.
Kurt Goddard, vice president for investor relations at FuelCell Energy, said the company has a much bigger installation in the works -- a 59-megawatt project in South Korea.
In all, there are more than 35 fuel cell installations in the state -- at hospitals, schools and private companies.
Fuel cells are sort of giant batteries, fuel by an energy source such as natural gas. They produce energy through chemical reactions, rather than combustion, so they are very clean. Fuel cells are also able to create electricity more efficiently than conventional power plants. If, as with Western, the fuel-cell designers can find a way to capture and utilize the heat the plant produces, the efficient rate grows dramatically.
The main problem with fuel cells today is this: While prices might be dropping, they're still expensive to build.
"It's true for us and true for any (emerging) technology,'' said Jennifer Sager, spokeswoman for ClearEdge -- which recently acquired UTC Power in South Windsor.
Sager would not say exactly how much Western's fuel cell cost to install. But she said a unit like the one at Western -- which will generate 400 kilowatts per hour of continuous electricity -- generally costs between $2 million and $2.5 million.
ClearEdge received a $593,000 grant from the state's Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority. The funds came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. ClearEdge will also receive a 30 percent federal tax credit, reducing the cost of what it pays for taxes on the Western plant.
Western contributed nothing toward building the plant. It will simply buy the energy from ClearEdge to power and heat the science building -- a deal that the university says could save $25,000 a year in reduced energy costs. Western's contract with ClearEdge runs for 10 years.
Sunita Satyapal, director of fuel cell technology for the federal Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, said these tax break, grants and subsidies have been needed to establish the fuel cell industry in the United States.
Samuelsen, of the National Fuel Cell Research Center, said fuel cells are so different from other power plants that people didn't quite believe in them.
"They don't understand them,'' he said. "How can you produce electricity without combustion?''
But over the past three to five years, Samuelsen said, the industry has begun to reach a sort of tipping point, as people got used to the softly humming boxes.
The fuel cell business is accelerating, Satyapal said, to the extent that in 2011, there were 20,000 new fuel cell installations in the United States, including both stationary systems and fuel cells used to power vehicles.
That was a 35 percent increase over 2010, she said. The national figures for 2012 should show a similar rate of growth, Satyapal said.
In Connecticut, there are now at least 29 sites with fuel cells, including the Western and Bridgeport projects.
Goddard of FuelCell Energy said that right now, the energy from his company's fuel cells costs about 13 cents to 15 cents a kilowatt, depending on the price of natural gas used as a fuel at the plant. That's competitive in Connecticut, where energy costs are high.
"In New York or California, we may need to get the price down to 12 cents or 14 cents a kilowatt to be competitive,'' he said. "We're really close.''
And in a state like Connecticut, where real estate is expensive, fuel cells are compact source of energy as well.
The Bridgeport plant, Goddard said, will produce 15 megawatts on 1.5 acres of land.
"To get the same amount of energy from a solar installation, you'd need about 75 acres,'' Goddard said. "That makes sense in Arizona, where desert land is cheap and the sun shines 300 days a year.''

BRIDGEPORT, Conn., May 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch today joined officials from Dominion (NYSE:D), one of the nation's largest energy companies, and FuelCell Energy Inc. (FCEL) to break ground at the largest fuel cell power project in North America.
Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell, which is being built downtown alongside Interstate 95 and the Northeast rail corridor, will produce 14.9 megawatts of clean energy – enough to power approximately 15,000 homes – using an electro-chemical process that efficiently converts natural gas into electricity.
"This power station will generate clean, reliable, base load electricity for Connecticut," said David A. Christian, Dominion Generation chief executive officer. "Our clean energy portfolio today includes wind, hydro, biomass, and, soon, solar and this facility when it begins operating later this year. Along with electricity, this project supports Connecticut's clean energy goals while producing significant economic development benefits for the State and the City of Bridgeport."
Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell is part of Project 150, a program sponsored by the state and supported by the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority (CEFIA) to increase renewable and clean energy projects in Connecticut by 150 megawatts. CEFIA is the nation's first full-scale clean energy finance authority that leverages public and private funds to drive investment and scale up clean energy deployment in Connecticut. This project was supported by the City of Bridgeport, which provides a tax incentive development agreement that will be in place for the life of the project.
"Cleaner, cheaper, more reliable energy is a critical part of strengthening our economy," said Malloy. "For years Connecticut residents and businesses have paid energy costs that top anywhere else in the nation—to the detriment of family budgets and commerce. With our new energy strategy and a focus on increasing renewable power options and efficiency measures, we will bring down costs for ratepayers, reduce carbon emissions, and create thousands of clean energy jobs."
"We are proud to be the home for one of the largest fuel cell facilities in North America," said Finch. "This is a great example of public-private partnerships working together to create jobs, expand economic development and make our environment cleaner by producing virtually pollution-free electricity with a low carbon footprint. This fuel cell park is another successful addition to the city's expanding Eco-Industrial Park. Many thanks go to Dominion and FuelCell Energy for their diligence in moving this project forward, and to Gov. Malloy for promoting clean energy projects in the state of Connecticut."
FuelCell Energy Inc. will build, operate, and maintain the facility under contract to Dominion.  FCE is supplying five Direct FuelCell® stationary fuel cell power plants and an organic rankine turbine that will convert heat from the fuel cells into additional electricity.
FuelCell Energy has expanded its Connecticut manufacturing workforce by more than 20 percent or more than 50 jobs in the past six months, reflecting demand such as this Bridgeport fuel cell park. The project is scheduled to be completed and placed into operation in late 2013.  Dominion will sell the output of the fuel cell power station to Connecticut Light & Power under a 15-year fixed power purchase agreement.
Dominion owns several renewable energy facilities in the United States, including wind farms in West Virginia and Indiana, a biomass power station in Virginia with three more under construction and hydroelectric power stations in Virginia and North Carolina. The company has also announced a 7.7-megawatt solar project in Georgia and the first company-owned rooftop solar installation in Virginia.
Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers and transporters of energy, with a portfolio of approximately 27,500 megawatts of generation, 11,000 miles of natural gas transmission, gathering and storage pipeline and 6,300 miles of electric transmission lines.  Dominion operates one of the nation's largest natural gas storage systems with 947 billion cubic feet of storage capacity and serves retail energy customers in 15 states.
