Times Internet Ltd of India and GoConnect Ltd of Australia target to dominate mobile media in India with m-Vision mobile video services
Official GoConnect Press Release - 24 December 2004 The mobile video service scenario in India is set for a radical makeover with Times Internet Ltd (TIL) entering into a major marketing and distribution partnership agreement with GoConnect Australia.
The m-Vision service will broaden the reach of The Times Group's existing fixed line Internet audience and allow subscribers to access broadcast quality video content through the m-Vision mobile delivery platform.
" It's an exciting venture and we will be able to redefine the rules of the game in the interests of the consumers," said Mahendra Swarup, CEO, TIL.
TIL's flagship online media property, www.indiatimes.com is India's largest web portal, with over 30 million monthly unique visitors, and also has content sourcing relationships with most leading Indian music labels and Bollywood production houses.
" Today our 8888 SMS is the most popular content service provider with 75 per cent market share in India and a daily usage of over 1.5 million messages. Through the m-Vision platform, The Times Group's marketing power, and our ability to source compelling video content from the Indian music industry and Bollywood, we aim to dominate the mobile media industry in India by taking it to a new multimedia level," said TN Prabhu, General Manager (Telecom), TIL.
TIL, the wholly owned subsidiary of The Times Group, the largest media group in India, and GoConnect Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Australian Stock Exchange listed GoConnect Ltd (GCN), are targeting the explosive growth of the mobile user base in India.
The existing 45 million mobile users are set to more than double next year. In fact, the growth this year alone will touch 65 per cent with 1.5 million mobile customers being added to the network each month - more than 37 million phones are expected to be sold in 2005.
" We are delighted to be able to partner with such a substantial media group and we look forward to expanding our existing content portfolio, sourced from famous brands including ABC TV, ABC Asia Pacific, and Naked News, to include Bollywood and Indian music content. Our partnership may well be extended to include a number of significant Windows Mobile device vendors in the future," said Richard Li, Chairman, GoConnect Ltd.
The partnership will also be able to expand the m-Vision subscriber base and advertising revenue by leveraging upon The Times Group's significant offline and online media properties and customer base from all over the world, including both the local and expatriate Indian communities.
