Motorola Telematics Group Books More Than $200 Million During First Half of 2000
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill., July 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola (NYSE: MOT) Telematics Communications Group (TCG) today announced its mid-year report, which reveals $200 million in new bookings during the first half of the year. This explosive growth is attributed to recent product and concept introductions, including the iRadio(TM) concept and integrated digital phones with several automotive manufacturer's, as well as the formation of several new strategic partnerships.
Unveiled in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Motorola's Internet radio prototype, iRadio, is a new concept multimedia delivery system that delivers in-vehicle information and entertainment via wireless web access. Complete with voice recognition and text-to-speech technologies, iRadio is a wireless Web client device which allows organized, easy access to content originating from multiple sources, whether via the Web, cellular communications, broadcast and satellite transmissions, or traditional AM/FM bands, among others. iRadio enables drivers to capture music on demand; listen to real-time traffic reports, download audio books access voicemail and receive other wireless capabilities.

In addition to the increased momentum surrounding its new technologies, Motorola has further positioned itself as a leader in telematics technology with the establishment of several strategic partnerships including the following:
-- Command Audio - Motorola and Command Audio will integrate Command Audio Service with Motorola's iRadio, providing in-vehicle information and entertainment services to motorists.
-- IBM - Motorola and IBM will help automakers bring a variety of wireless and Web-based services to drivers and passengers worldwide. By leveraging each other's expertise and industry leadership, the two companies will establish an integrated approach to help auto manufacturers get the next generation of telematics products to market quickly and meet the growing customer demand for in-vehicle communication/information/entertainment systems.
-- Trafficmaster - Motorola and Trafficmaster, Europe's foremost provider of live traffic information, have agreed to co-operate with Blaupunkt, Europe's leading supplier of navigation systems, via GSM. By adding the Blaupunkt Travel Pilot navigation system Travel Pilot DX-N to current Motorola/Trafficmaster applications, the latest navigation systems will be able to display a constant stream of dynamic traffic information without any interaction required from the user.
-- BCI Navigation and Liikkuva - Motorola's alliances with BCI Navigation and Liikuva Systems is part of a larger strategy to build upon the safety, security, navigation and concierge services already being delivered to drivers through Motorola's Telematics capabilities.
-- Phon-Or - Motorola and Israeli-based Phone-Or will bring the Phone-Or Background Noise Suppression (BNS) microphone system to Motorola's next generation of Telematics automotive applications.
-- Cellport - Motorola and Cellport Systems will bring the Cellport(R) 3000, a universal hands-free system to Motorola Telematics systems. This collaboration allows for the Motorola Telematics Communications Unit (TCU(TM)) to become the foundation communications platform in the automobile, regardless of the phone model used by the consumer.
