Vestas lands record turbine order
Vestas announced Wednesday a 570-megawatt order for 190 of its wind turbines for a development in California that's slated to be one of the largest wind power plants in the United States.
Subsidiaries of Alta Wind Holdings LLC, which in turn is a subsidiary of Terra-Gen Power LLC, placed the order for the Alta Wind Energy Center near Tehachapi, Calif. Terra-Gen closed on $1.2 billion in financing for the project which is expected to boost California's wind-power output by 25 percent.
The order is Portland-based Vestas Americas' largest for a single site. Vestas Americas is the U.S. division of Denmark-based Vestas A/S.
The Alta Wind development is also of note because its bank financing, bond issue and sale leaseback financing is the largest of any North American wind-energy project and the first wind-energy leveraged lease to be placed in the debt capital markets.
"The entire Vestas team looks forward to helping Terra-Gen bring this exceptional project to reality. When completed, it will be the largest wind farm we will have supplied turbines to in our 31-year history as well as the biggest in California," said Martha Wyrsch, President of Vestas Americas, in a press release. “Terra-Gen has selected an excellent turbine and service package. We will work closely with their financiers and customers to make this project successful."
At 570 MW, Alta Wind Energy Center would generate enough wind power for about 150,000 homes.
Vestas' factories in Colorado will build the components for the order, which is scheduled for delivery later this year. The first 50 turbines are expected to be turning by the end of 2010.
This order, for Vestas V90-3.0 MW turbines, marks Vestas’ eighth North American deal announced in 2010, totaling 1,336 MW this year among four turbine types.
