RIM tops profit forecasts, predicts more strength

TORONTO (Reuters) - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd (RIM.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) (RIMM.O: Quote, Profile, Research) reported a second-quarter profit on Thursday that beat expectations, as it broke the 10-million subscriber mark and predicted strength for the rest of the year.

RIM said it earned $287.7 million, or 50 cents a share, for the three months ended September 1. That was up from a profit of $140.2 million, or 25 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier.

It also said it added 1.45 million subscribers in the quarter -- better than what it predicted in June -- to hit a total of about 10.5 million. It said more than 3 million of its devices were shipped in the quarter.

For the upcoming third quarter, RIM forecast revenue of between $1.6 billion and $1.67 billion and earnings per share of between 59 and 63 cents. It said it expects to add about 1.65 million new subscribers.

The results for the second quarter were better than the top end of the outlook that RIM gave investors in June. The third-quarter forecast also handily beat analyst expectations, according to Reuters Estimates......

Research In Motion (RIM)

Research In Motion (RIM) recently introduced the BlackBerry Pearl 8130, the first Bla ckBerry Pearl smartphone to run on CDMA networks. The new model stays true to the highly acclaimed style and compact design of the BlackBerry Pearl and comes packed with new features including communications enhancements, a striking new software interface, rich multimedia capabilities, built-in GPS and support for high-speed EV-DO networks.

"With its unique blend of functionality and design, the BlackBerry Pearl smartphone has been turning heads and winning praise from business users and consumers alike," said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "The new BlackBerry Pearl 8130 builds on all the great features and aesthetic design that people love about the BlackBerry Pearl and offers an exceptional new choice for CDMA customers that are looking to upgrade their mobile phone."

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 includes all of the features that have made BlackBerry smartphones popular among mobile users, including unrivaled email and messaging (SMS, IM, MMS(i)), web browsing, organizer and more. The new smartphone also expands on its communications and multimedia features and presents the entire offering with a striking new software interface.

ULTRA-SLEEK & STYLISH DESIGN

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 features a sleek, compact design measuring just 4.2" x 1.97" x .55" and weighing only 3.38 oz. It provides an intuitive user experience through its trackball navigation system and RIM's popular SureType keyboard system. SureType - which allows a narrower handset design while maintaining easy phone dialing and message typing - has been enhanced to allow word completion, easier editing misspelled words and a built-in spell checker.

ENHANCED SOFTWARE INTERFACE

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 features an updated visual interface and integrates a new font rendering technology that displays characters beautifully, with enhanced legibility at even the smallest point sizes. The new technology is evident throughout the visual interface, complementing the new look of the BlackBerry email client, calendar, address book, task list, memo pad and web browser, while also enhancing other applications.

The BlackBerry Browser is further improved with a new "Page View" option that displays a full web page on the screen along with a magnifying glass that allows the user to quickly and accurately point and zoom in on a specific area of the web page. Users can also press and hold the trackball to toggle between the "Column View" (which presents the web page in a continuous column for easy reading and scrolling on the go) and the "Page View." The new BlackBerry Browser also provides quicker access to Bookmarks and History, and supports the 3GPP RTSP Streaming protocol via EV-DO, so users can view streaming video from sites like m.youtube.com.

RICH MULTIMEDIA FEATURES

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 comes with a 2 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom and enhanced flash. The new camera also supports video capture in two resolutions: 240x180 or 176x144 for sharing via MMS.

The media player now allows users to create and edit playlists right on the handset. Alternatively, users can manage their media files from their PC with the Roxio Media Manager for BlackBerry , which is included with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software. The Roxio software was developed with Sonic and is based on the award-winning Roxio Easy Media Creator 9, making it easy for users to search for media files on their computer, view and organize them, create MP3 music files from CDs, add audio tags, album art, create playlists and convert files for optimal playback.

Roxio Photosuite 9 LE is also included - this comprehensive tool makes it easy to edit pictures and create photo albums. Pictures can also be cropped, rotated and straightened, redeye can be removed, and brightness, contrast and saturation levels can all be changed.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 supports the Bluetooth stereo audio profile (A2DP/AVRCP), and comes with a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack so users can plug in their preferred headphones or speakers. The handset also provides the convenience of an externally accessible microSD/SDHC memory card slot for additional storage of music, videos and pictures.

BUILT-IN GPS AND NAVIGATION

The BlackBerry Pearl 8130 includes built-in GPS to provide out-of-the-box support for location-based applications and services(i). BlackBerry Maps, which can conveniently guide users to their destination, now includes a local search capability that allows users to find local businesses, such as banks, hotels and restaurants, within a short driving distance. The smartphone also includes new features that enhance phone audio quality including enhanced background noise, wind and echo cancellation for better performance in loud environments like airports, restaurants or busy downtown streets. An 'enhance call audio' feature also allows the user to boost the phone audio's bass or treble while on a call.

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd said on Wednesday it will work with Eatoni Ergonomics Inc to develop a new text keyboard technology.

The two companies signed an agreement in which Eatoni, which specializes in designing hardware and software for keyboards, would grant RIM a license to use its technology. RIM, in return, made an equity investment in Eatoni.

The pact stems from a settlement agreement between the two over a lawsuit and a counter-suit related to patent infringement, the companies said.

"The parties met in accordance with the court's mediation process and common goals were identified, which led to the settlement," RIM and Eatoni said in a statement.

The two companies' claims have been mutually dismissed and further details of the pact are being kept confidential.

RIM's shares closed 93 Canadian cents higher at C$114.58 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. On Nasdaq, they rose $1.36 to finish at $116.88

RIM Inks Deal with China Mobile for Blackberry Mobile Email Service

Blackberry Mobile e-mail service offers users the ability to roam wherever they wish and still access their corporate e-mails via the device.

Currently, approximately 300 wireless networks in more than 120 countries are supporting BlackBerry mobile email service. In Asia, it has been widely accepted by users in Japan, South Korea, India, and Taiwan.

China Mobile (News - Alert) feels that the BlackBerry service can be a major threat to Redberry, the similar mobile email service launched by China Unicom.

"Price will be the decisive factor for BlackBerry to win the market in China. What is more, it has to be more localized and customized in this country as most of Chinese businessmen are still not used to the BlackBerry style," says an industry analyst from BDA.

RIM Moves To Put Firm's BlackBerry In China's Many Hands

Research In Motion rimm will sell its popular BlackBerry smart phone in China after announcing a deal Tuesday to enter the world's largest cell phone market.

RIM's shares surged 10% on the news to a new high of 124.53.

The Nasdaq roared after RIM's 2p.m. EDT announcement. It rallied 1.6% to end at its session high. The S&P 500 rose 0.9%.

Alcatel-Lucent alu will start distributing RIM's smart phones later this year. China Mobile chl will be the service provider.

RIM has made "significant progress in the past three years" in China, said co-CEO Jim Balsillie in its Oct. 4 quarterly earnings call.

BlackBerry phones have worked with China Mobile since last year. But people couldn't buy them in the country.

The deal with Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE:ALU) gives it a direct line.

"With business booming in China and with it adding more (cellular) infrastructure, that presents a huge opportunity for RIM," said Jack Gold, research analyst with J. Gold Associates.

China Mobile alone boasts 350 million customers, adding 48.4 million in the first nine months of the year. Many of those users rely on low-end handsets, however.

China's Getting Smart

But 5.4 million smart phones were sold in China in the first half of 2007, said research firm IDC.

Gold estimates that more than 100 million BlackBerry-like devices will be sold in China between now and 2010 to the high-income customers that RIM appeals to. Add the middle class and that could swell to 500 million.

"Every cell phone maker is trying to break into that market, including Motorola (NYSE:MEU) (NYSE:MOT) mot, Samsung, LG and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) nok, and there are a lot of home-grown competitors," Gold said. "But RIM has a monster reputation in the world for being a first-class product. Even if they get just 2%, that's huge for them."

RIM on Tuesday shipped its first smart phones to Chinese distribution networks. BlackBerry devices should go on sale this year, starting with the 2-year-old 8700 line.

TCL Communications, a mobile device maker in China that holds the Alcatel brand for handsets, will be a manufacturing partner.

Alcatel and RIM have previously teamed up to sell the BlackBerry in Algeria and Ukraine.

BlackBerry's China success will partly depend on how enamored customers are with mobile e-mail, said Rob Sanderson, analyst at American Technology Research.

"There's no enterprise-grade e-mail solutions entrenched in the Chinese market right now," Sanderson said.

"It's still very early in terms of market development for RIM, but the steps they're taking now is the foundation for what they need to put in place," he added. "When RIM moves into a new market it can take them two or three years before we see an inflection point."

Among the challenges for RIM, said independent research analyst Todd Kort, is that Chinese characters don't work as well with small keyboards as the English alphabet does.

"Every Western company faces this problem," said Kort, "but especially RIM because the base device of its keyboard is to develop one that's appropriate for e-mail. It's obvious that something will have to be compromised. I'm not expecting RIM to be as popular in China or even Japan as they are in the U.S."

RIM has been on a roll, with its shares tripling this year. Strong demand for its BlackBerry lineup fueled a 108% sales jump to $1.37 billion in its third quarter

Expect to see BlackBerrys distributed in China by Jan 1.

Research In Motion expects to begin distributing its popular BlackBerry handheld devices in China by the end of the year under a partnership with Alcatel-Lucent. The first smart phone offered to Chinese enterprise customers will be the 8700.

Alcatel-Lucent achieved certification of the 8700 model for the Chinese market through a partnership with TCL Communications, a major mobile device manufacturer in China that holds the Alcatel brand for mobile handsets. RIM and TCL are showing the BlackBerry smart phones at the PT Expo Comm China show in Beijing this week.

"This agreement strengthens the distribution frame agreement that Alcatel-Lucent and RIM signed last year covering Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia and now extends to China," Frederic Rose, president of Alcatel Shanghai Bell and president of Alcatel-Lucent's Asia Pacific activities, said in a statement.

Last May, RIM, of Waterloo, Ontario, signed a deal with China Mobile Communications to offer RIM's e-mail service, but Chinese regulators held up approval until January of this year. The delay meant BlackBerry users had to bring in handsets from outside China.

eWEEK.com Special Report: Wireless Evolution

"Following our launch of the BlackBerry service with China Mobile, we are very pleased to now enter this smart phone distribution agreement with Alcatel-Lucent and Alcatel Shanghai Bell," RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie said in a statement.

"We look forward to building on the early interest and momentum we are experiencing in China with both multinational and domestic corporations."

RIM's distribution deal with Alcatel-Lucent prompted Citigroup analyst Jim Suva to up his year-end target price for RIM to $140 a share from his previous estimate of $117. In an investment note, Suva said the 8700 is already in mass production, which will reduce development and research time to ready the device for the Chinese market.

China has more than 500 million mobile subscribers.

Research in Motion

BlackBerry users are a relatively small but vocal group. Many pledge undying loyalty to the portable communications device, to the benefit of its Canadian maker Research in Motion Ltd. (RIMM)

With about 10 million BlackBerry users, Research in Motion is still a niche player, Weiner says. That means there's plenty of room for growth, he adds. More subscribers, in turn, lowers costs and boosts profit margins -- at least, that's the bullish case. While Weiner appreciates BlackBerry's cult-like following, he's keeping a close eye on its competition.

"So far they've been able to keep their service and hardware differentiated," Weiner said about Research in Motion. "Their risk is obsolescence. RIMM has to change its formula every six months -- new software, new hardware -- and fend off everyone else that's going after them. It's a big job."

Shares of Research in Motion slid $3.25 to $101.50 on Tuesday.

Research in Motion Shares Rise on JetBlue Wi-Fi Plan and Possible Delays for New IPhone

Shares of BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. rose Friday on reports that JetBlue passengers will be able check e-mail in-flight on their BlackBerrys, and that Apple Inc.'s latest iPhone may be delayed.

RIM struck a deal with JetBlue Airways Corp., under which the airline will test a service allowing passengers to check their e-mail. The service will only be available to passengers with a Wi-Fi capable BlackBerry.

Citi Investment Research analyst Jim Suva said the program could drive up BlackBerry sales if it is rolled out to all JetBlue flights.

"We believe that some portion of business travelers are increasingly choosing to travel with just a Research in Motion device and today's announcement should help reinforce that trend and would likely stimulate replacement unit sales," he said.

The stock gained $1.70, to $105.58 in morning trading.

Citing news reports, Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek said Apple Inc.'s third-generation, or 3G, iPhone, which would be able to surf the Internet faster, will be released in late May or early June 2008. He reiterated a "Buy" rating on the stock, and said that wait will give Research in Motion an advantage.

"If true, the launch of the 3G iPhone comes later than we had anticipated," he said. "We expect Research in Motion to launch its 3G handset by the end of February 2008, which would give the company a considerable lead ahead of Apple's new iPhone. Additionally, we anticipate a touch-screen BlackBerry by the end of 2008."

BlackBerry Mobile Phones to Debut in China in Jan 08

§China Mobile Ltd. (SEHK: 0941 and NYSE: CHL) will launch BlackBerry mobile phones from Research In Motion (Nasdaq: RIMM) in the Chinese market in January 2008, said a technological employee of the country's largest mobile carrier on December 11, 2007.

The BlackBerry 8700g mobile phones are being tested by the mobile carrier now and are expected to make its debut in the market next month, said the employee.

China Mobile is pricing the products. They will surely have competitive prices, lower than estimated around CNY 5,000. A barebone mobile phone might be priced at between CNY 3,000 and CNY 4,000, added the employee.

The company may even give free BlackBerry mobile phones to those subscribers who agree to use the service of China Mobile as well as BlackBerry service packages for at least two years. China Mobile is chosen as the exclusive vendor of BlackBerry mobile phones, a business-oriented handheld device providing wireless connectivity solution, in the country.

UPDATE: RIM, Palm Earnings To Be At Cross-purposes

Once again, the fortunes of the only two pure- play makers of smart phones are expected to diverge in this week's earnings reports.

Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM), the Canadian company that makes the popular line of BlackBerry wireless phones, is expected to see its sales nearly double for the quarter ended Dec. 1 with continued strong demand from both businesses and consumers. Net income is expected to surge by more than 60%, according to current Wall Street estimates.

By contrast, Palm Inc. (PALM) is expected to swing to a loss for the quarter with a 10% drop in sales for the same period.

Jim Suva of Citigroup predicted in a report Monday that the difference in the two companies' results "will be glaring." He wrote that RIM is expected to post a strong quarter despite "recent macroeconomic fears" as well as weakness in the troubled financial-services sector -- historically a big BlackBerry buyer.

"We don't believe that the smart-phone segment is the tide that raises all boats, as we view the segment as hotly competitive and striated by pricing tier, service offering and target demographics," Suva said.

Research In Motion is expected to report earnings of 62 cents a share for the quarter on revenue of $1.65 billion. For the same period last year, the company reported revenue of $835.1 million and earnings of 32 cents a share -- adjusted to reflect a 3-for-1 stock split that took effect in August.

Palm is expected to post a loss of 6 cents a share on revenue of $352.4 million, according to estimates from Thomson Financial. This time last year, the company earned 17 cents a share, before charges, on revenue of $392.9 million.

The results for Palm -- which reports its numbers after Tuesday's closing bell -- are widely expected, as the company warned two weeks ago that a shipping delay for a key product and "unforeseen" expenses related to warranty repairs would pinch sales and cause the bottom line to slip into the red for the quarter.

No preannouncement has been issued for RIM, though investors have worried of late that rising pressure on consumers from the housing crunch, as well as a potential slowdown of demand from the corporate side, could shave off some of the company's incredible growth rate.

RIM shares have shed about 18% of their value in the last two weeks, though the stock is still up nearly 140% from the start of the year.

"RIM shares have underperformed other growth leaders and IT suppliers in the last six weeks. To us, this suggests that concern over the earnings report is holding the stock back," Rob Sanderson of American Technology Research wrote in a note Monday. "After recent checks, we have reasonably high confidence that guidance will be in line or better -- we now believe the higher-probability scenario is a guide up rather than in line."

Guidance will be closely watched for both companies, but even more so for RIM, given the stock's recent weakness. Palm seems to have a hit with its $99 Centro, which may put some pressure on RIM's own BlackBerry Curve at the lower end of the segment.

"RIM is clearly still the top smart-phone brand at the four major U.S. carriers, but more and more of this strength appears to be skewing toward AT&T ( T)," Tavis McCourt of Morgan Keegan wrote in a report last week. "Verizon (VZ) and Sprint (US-S) appear less willing to significantly discount BlackBerries or aggressively market them for consumer use."

Sprint has an exclusive deal to market the Centro. McCourt also noted that new competition is coming to the sector with new phone models from Korean company LG, which among other things has launched the LG Voyager -- a touch-screen device that could compete Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone.

Still, RIM by far has the favor of Wall Street. Citigroup's Suva called the stock his "top pick" for 2008 following its strong performance this year.

"We view the smart-phone market as a secular growth segment within handsets, and view RIM as extremely well positioned due to carrier partnership strategy, talented management and technology," he wrote

It's show time for BlackBerry smartphone maker Research In Motion  as the company gets set to report its third-quarter results Thursday.

The stock of Ontario, Canada-based RIM had been on a tear until recently, and the company has emerged as one of the biggest stories on Wall Street with a market capitalization of $56.9 billion.

But in the past few weeks, concerns that a slowdown in the financial services sector could negatively affect demand for RIM's BlackBerry smartphones have weighed on the stock.

The company's shares, which gained nearly 12% in the last three months, declined approximately 6.5% in the last four weeks.

A strong earnings report could help turn the tide and set the stock, which has in the past three quarters always wobbled before the results, on track again.

Analysts expect RIM to beat third-quarter expectations and to offer strong guidance for the fourth quarter.

Company watchers say RIM's phones, including the Pearl and Curve, remain popular and should help sustain sales.

"We are looking for continuation of strong top-line growth," says John Derrick, co-manager of the Holmes Growth Fund, which holds RIM in its portfolio, "and we want them to maintain their margins."

For the third quarter, analysts polled by Thomson Financial are expecting earnings of 62 cents a share on revenue of $1.65 billion, compared with earnings of 31 cents a share on revenue of $835 million for the year-ago quarter

5570 Postings, 6660 Tage skunk.worksEarnings Preview: Research in Motion

BlackBerry smart phone maker Research In Motion Ltd. reports its fiscal third-quarter earnings Thursday. The following is a summary of key developments and analyst opinion related to the period.

OVERVIEW: During the quarter which ended Dec. 1, Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Research in Motion announced plans to sell BlackBerry devices in China.

In October, RIM and French telecommunications company Alcatel-Lucent said they signed a strategic agreement to start distributing the BlackBerry 8700 model in some Chinese markets later this year. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Also during the quarter, RIM said its first handset to include Wi-Fi connectivity -- the BlackBerry 8820 -- would be available in September through AT&T Inc.'s wireless division.

In September, RIM also released the BlackBerry Curve 8320 handset, which is the company's first to work with wireless carrier T-Mobile USA's HotSpot AtHome system, which lets users make calls via T-Mobile Wi-Fi hotspots and switch automatically from making calls over cellular networks to making them over Wi-Fi.

BY THE NUMBERS: In October, RIM projected third-quarter earnings between 59 cents and 63 cents per share on revenue of between $1.60 billion and $1.67 billion.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect the company to report earnings of 62 cents per share with sales of $1.65 billion.

ANALYST TAKE: In a recent client note, JPMorgan analyst Paul Coster predicted the company will post solid third-quarter results "buoyed by deepening penetration of the enterprise, rapid adoption in the consumer segment and international expansion."

Coster, who rates RIM shares "Overweight," also expects solid fourth-quarter guidance from the company.

In a client note, Citi Investment Research analyst Jim Suva anticipated the company's quarterly results will be at least in line with Wall Street expectations.

"We expect RIM to post another solid quarter despite recent macroeconomic fears and concerns over financial services exposure," he said.

STOCK PERFORMANCE: Research In Motion shares rose about 33 percent during the quarter. The shares finished trading Tuesday at $100.69.
