"Geely Auto Jan-Apr sales up 55% to 135,300 vehicles

Shanghai, May 20 (Gasgoo.com) Geely Auto recently announced that the company sold 32,441 vehicles in April, up 7.2% month on month and up 24.7% year on year, media reported.

In the first four months of this year, Geely's vehicles sales grew 55.1% from a year earlier to 135,279 units, achieving 38% of the company's full-year sales target of 400,000 units.

In April sales, Geely's three best-selling models were the Free Cruiser, Kingkong, and Vision, which sold 5,588, 7,141 and 4,233 units, respectively. The Emgrand sold 5,414 units, up 25% month on month.

Geely said the company would launch five new models this year to keep its continual and sustainable growth in the auto market.

Parent company Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the buyer of Ford Motor's Volvo car unit, plans to increase its annual vehicle sales six-fold to 2 million units by 2015 and to launch 24 new models in the next two years.

Geely Group sold 325,000 vehicles last year, with three new models launched, and has set this year's sales target at as much as 500,000 units."

"Geely may increase 20M MBH new shares

China's Geely Automobile will likely increase 20 million new ordinary shares of UK company Manganese Bronze Holdings (MBH), Geely said in a statement filed with the Hong Kong stock exchange on Tuesday.

The board of directors of Geely Automobile Holdings Limited, China's biggest private-run carmaker, announced that the company has received a written notification from MBH after trading hours on Monday that the board of MBH intended to invite Geely to subscribe for 20 million new ordinary shares of MBH.

If the Potential Subscription materializes, Geely's interest in MBH will increase from approximately 19.97 percent to approximately 51.68 percent of the enlarged share capital of MBH.

Geely signed an acquisition contract to buy Volvo, an auto unit of US carmaker Ford Motor, for $1.8 billion at the end of March."

According to Chinese automotive media reports, the forthcoming Geely Gleagle IG mini car is going to be priced lower than the worlds cheapest car, the Tata Nano.

The Geely IG will go on the market in 2012 in China first, and will be sold worldwide eventually. The opening price is set to be from $2,250USD whereas the Tata Nano is priced from $2,700USD to $3,800USD.

It's unclear if the Geely Gleagle IG will be packing its super cool doors into the production door, but it is likely to be a solid metal vehicle, unlike the Nano which is a plastic bodied affair."

"Cogo to make GPS navigation for Geely

Chinese industrial software provider Cogo Group Inc. said Thursday it will design GPS navigation systems and other advanced technology for Chinese automaker Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.

Cogo said it will make several applications, including in-car personal computers and automotive black boxes. It didn't say how much the deal was worth, but expects to start generating revenue from the agreement in the fourth quarter.

Geely, one of China's biggest carmakers, bought Volvo from Ford Motor Co. earlier this year. The company has said it hopes to raise sales of its own brands from a projected 400,000 units this year to up to 2 million by 2015, with as many as half sold in foreign markets.

Cogo also makes products for Chinese automaker BYD.

"We recorded our initial auto revenue in the first quarter of 2010, and we expect this business to ramp well over the next several years," Cogo CEO Jeffrey Kang said in a statement."

"Yulon hopes to produce more Geely models in Taiwan

Shanghai, June 7 (Gasgoo.com) Yulon Motor, the largest automaker in Taiwan, hopes to make more vehicle models from its mainland partner Geely Auto after its Tobe mini model based on the Geely Panda saw brisk sales in the past few months, local media reported recently.

Late last month Yulon said it had sold more than 1,400 Tobe M mini hatchbacks since the model's demonstration in Taiwan in late 2009. The model was developed by Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd. and locally assembled by Yulon Motor Co. in Taiwan.

A senior Yulon executive said Yulon is in talks with Geely over introducing more models and engines for local assembly in Taiwan, adding that Yulon is redesigning parts of the Tobe Cross or the Geely GX-2 crossover, to meet local consumers' taste, the Taiwan Economic News reported.

Yulon recently launched its second Luxgen model, the Luxgen SUV and plans to launch its second Tobe model -- a 1,500cc mini crossover. The company has formed a joint venture with mainland China's Dongfeng Motor Corp to produce the Luxgen sedan and SUV in Hangzhou.

Geely previously said it would ship semi-knocked down kits of its Panda compact model to Taiwan for local assembly by Yulon's "Tobe" division and the vehicle would be sold there under Yulon's Tobe brand.

Yulon has also developed a lithium-ion battery-powered electric vehicle (BEV) based on the Panda platform, and the Geely Panda-derived electric car is expected to go on sale in Taiwan later this year."

"Ford's communications manager to lead Geely promotion

Shanghai, June 7 (Gasgoo.com) Geely Holding Group, which is buying Ford Motor's Volvo car unit, has hired Kenneth Hsu, former global communications manager of the U.S. automaker to lead Geely's global communication and brand promotion team, Reuters reported today.

An auto industry veteran, Hsu also served as vice president for Ford's China operations. He assumed his new role at Geely last week, the Chinese company said in a statement over the weekend.

Geely Group, parent of Geely Automobile Holdings, signed an agreement with Ford Motor in March to take over Ford's Volvo car business for $1.8 billion, marking the largest ever overseas acquisition by a Chinese auto company. The deal is expected to complete in the third quarter.

Geely is starting to optimize its management structure to get better prepared for fast development of its global operations following the Volvo brand purchase. Geely said it would explore the overseas markets for its own brand while maintaining Volvo's global business.

Geely's chairman Li Shufu is planning a Volvo factory in China which will make 300,000 Volvo-branded cars. Industry experts said the Volvo deal will help Geely promote its global brand."

"Volvo China sales soar by 108% y/y in Jan-May

Shanghai, June 8 (Gasgoo.com)The U.S. auto market showed signs of recovery in May, with several major car brands posting sales increase from a year earlier. However, sales of Volvo declined 16.5% year on year. On the contrary, China's auto sales in May continued to decrease from April figures, while the Volvo sales in China soared by 108% in January-May 2010, more than double its last year's sales.

Data shows that Volvo sales in the U.S. in May came to 4,659 units, down 16.5% from the same period of last year, when Volvo sales fell below 330,000. Nevertheless, its sales surged by 108% in China, achieving record success during the period from January to May 2010. China has now become Volvo's fourth largest market in the world.

Additionally, the deal of Geely's acquisition of Volvo, signed in March this year, is expected to be clinched in August. After the acquisition, the production base for Volvo has become a major concern in the industry. In addition to Beijing, Chongqing, Chengdu and Dalian cities, recent rumors said that Shanghai's Jiading district is the most possible location for the Volvo plant. Geely said that the location has not been decided yet."

"Geely to set up DSI transmission factory in Jining

In the middle of 2009 Geely began to spread its wings on the international scale and one of its first ventures was to take over Drivetrain Systems International, one of the worlds largest gearbox manufactures from Australia.

Geely have invested 1.6 billion Yuan into the new factory in Jininig which will be able to produce 300,000 gearboxes every year for the Chinese market. These gearboxes will initially find their way into Geely models, specifically 1.8L and above sedans and compact SUV’s, but it is expected that Geely will sell their produce onto other manufactures as well.

Geely has so far lacked automatic transmission technology, whilst its nearest rival at Chery are already equipping their cars with automatics.

Full press release from Geely:

Australian DSI lands in Shandong and speeds up Geely’s AT technology

On June 8, Shandong Geely Transmission Co. held the foundation-laying ceremony in Jining, Shandong Province. The ceremony marked the localization of the world’s second largest private transmission company- Drivetrain Systems International (DSL) acquired by Geely in 2009, signaling the official launch of Geely’s strategy of “going outside, joining the International competition, attracting foreign investment and global integration.”

Filling in gaps for Chinese AT technology

Automatic transmission (AT) decides power, economy and car amenity. According to statistics from 2005-2008, among sales of passenger cars in China, the number of auto-transmission cars increased from one million to 2.3 million with market coverage increasing from 25 to 40 percent. It is predicted that by 2015, the number will be 4.5 million with the market coverage at 50 percent. Meanwhile, the need for highly fuel-efficient automatic transmission becomes more apparent when considering factors like fuel economy.

On the one hand, the market has a great demand for automatic transmission as it develops in such a rapid developing speed, while on the other hand, Chinese enterprises are not qualified enough for AT technology for passenger cars. Data shows that in 2008, 2.28 million automatic-transmission cars out of 2.3 million were manufactured by foreign companies or joint ventures (JV), which demonstrates that foreign AT technology possesses a monopoly position in China and Chinese customers were paying for it. Technological monopoly led to high price and high limitations, which blocked the development of Chinese AT technology and factitiously raised prices of AT cars.

DSI technology helps to break the wall

As one of the earliest auto makers dedicated to the development of AT technology, in May 2005, Geely JL-Z automatic transmission series were loaded to cars, which achieved a breakthrough for Chinese auto makers. In fact, in 2008, almost all the 20,000 AT cars sold in China came from Geely.

In 2009, Geely, with the very lighting speed acquired DSI. DSI with ability of design, development and product industrialization and over 80 years’ history, has currently produced a world-leading AT system. DSI has cooperated with Australian Ford for 30 years and is also a partner of Geely Englon TX4, Indian M&M, Korean SsangYong Motors as well as customers from Russia.

“AT technology has always been a barrier for Chinese auto makers, Car models loaded with advanced AT are so rare and the cost is high. By acquiring DSI, the cost can be reduced while competitiveness for Geely will be upgraded. It is not only good for Geely, but also beneficial for DSI, whose biggest customer is Geely,” said Zhang Xiaoyu, chairman of Society of Automotive Engineers of China (SAE-China).

Speed up to digest DSI technology

It is reported that equipped with 1.6 billion yuan, Shandong Geely Transmission Co. will produce 300,000 AT per year. The manufacturing technology will be improved by Geely according to domestic need. The company will initially produce AT with high torque of 6, which can be used for cars with engines above 1.8 litres or SUVs. This type of AT has higher fuel-oil efficiency, faster reaction and apparent driving amenity compared with current Chinese AT. The project is expected to become an important economic pillar for the local government and provide 400 jobs directly after completion.

According to Geely, the AT project meets government requirements on resources disposition and use, structural adjustment, energy conservation and environmental protection. The automatic transmissions to be produced possesses leading technology and can adapt to the market easily. As Jining company starts operation, the plant will provide Geely and other domestic automakers with 6 models of AT, thus domestic market’s dependence on foreign products will be fundamentally changed.

“By the end of this year, Geely Vision will be the first to experience the new AT. And following will be Geely Emgrand, MBH’s London Taxi, SUV and EC8 series. Before the beginning of 2011, all Geely’s 9 types of cars will be loaded with this new technology,” said An Conghui, vice president of Geely. "

255 Postings, 6183 Tage ScatloverGeely-Volvo China HQ to be located in Shanghai

"Geely-Volvo China HQ to be located in Shanghai

Shanghai, June 13 (Gasgoo.com) Yesterday, Chinese media reported that Geely-Volvo (China) headquarters will probably be located in Shanghai's Jiading Industrial Zone, and the China plants will be built in Shanghai's Jiagding District and Heilongjiang province's Daqing city.

Zhejiang Geely Holding Group signed a deal at the end of March with Ford Motor Co. to acquire the U.S. auto giant's Volvo car unit for $1.8 billion, and since then there have been many guesses about where Volvo's China plant will be established.

However, Geely Chairman Li Shufu denied the earlier report about Volvo's Shanghai plant by saying:" I do not even know where the plant will be, how could they tell?"

A staff member from one auto-making company in Shanghai's Jiading District confirmed yesterday that Geely is currently looking to recruit new staff in Shanghai Jiading Industrial Zone and is making advances to technical staff in a few of auto-making companies or branches in Shanghai.

Moreover, business registration information shows that Shanghai Jili (Geely) Zhao Yuan International Investment Co., Ltd. was registered in the industrial and commercial bureau of Shanghai's Jiading District with registered capital of 20 mln yuan ($2.9 million) on February 24 this year.

Besides, Beijing Geely Wanyuan International Investment Co., Ltd. and the new Geely-Volvo ((Jia-Er-Wo in Chinese) company were the shareholders. The former contributed 17.53 million yuan, holding 87.65% stake in Geely Zhaoyuan Company and the latter contributed 2.47 million yuan, holding 12.35% stake in it.

It is reported that the nation's authorities will consider Volvo's overseas operations when making a decision on whether to approve the Geely-Volvo production in China or not.

Additionally, recent research over the subject by Gasgoo.com shows that nearly 80% of industry insiders believe that the possibility for Geely-Volvo headquarters to be located in Shanghai is very good."
