: TSMC sales forecast to grow 25% year-on-year in Q1
https://focustaiwan.tw/business/202103010007 "...In a research note, TrendForce said that with its production capacity fully utilized, TSMC's sales for the first quarter are estimated at US$12.91 billion in the January-March period, up 25 percent from US$10.31 billion a year earlier.
Due to the increase in sales, TSMC is expected to cement the lead over its peers by taking a 56 percent share in the global pure wafer foundry business, TrendForce said.
TrendForce's forecast was in line with TSMC's own estimate made in mid-January, which pointed to a range between US$12.7 billion to US$13.0 billion for the first quarter. The advisory firm said that TSMC continued to benefit from its efforts in developing the 5 nanometer process, the latest technology the chipmaker launched into mass production since the second quarter of last year. The 5nm process is expected to account for about 20 percent of TSMC's total revenue in the first quarter of this year....The advisory firm said the 7nm process is expected to make up more than 30 percent of TSMC's total sales in the first quarter...."
"Samsung Electronics Co. revealed additional details about its plans to build a cutting-edge semiconductor facility in the U.S. in a filing with the Texas government, making the disclosure as the Biden administration vows to make the security of the U.S. chip supply a national priority.
The South Korean company plans to invest about $17 billion in its Project Silicon Silver and create about 1,800 jobs over the first ten years, according to an economic impact study prepared by a local consultant. Some $5.1 billion would go into buildings and property improvements, while $9.9 billion would be spent on machinery and equipment."
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) was on Thursday set to sell local currency bonds, as it prepared for a spending blitz amid a global chip shortage. The world’s largest contract chipmaker planned to price about NT$16 billion (US$565.25 million) of notes in three parts in an auction, though the actual issuance size might change […] The debt offering comes at a promising time for the semiconductor industry as the world scrambles its way through the shortfall for the key components in everything from smartphones to TVs and vehicles.
US President Joe Biden’s administration has pressed Taiwan, home to the largest semiconductor manufacturing sector in the world, to help resolve a shortfall of auto chips that has idled some auto plants. Part of the plan for that money is to build a US factory in Arizona. Those plans were first announced back in May of last year. .... https://9to5mac.com/2021/03/01/arizona-chip-plant/
“The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is planning to build a total of six factories within the United States as part of its efforts to set up a manufacturing facility in the country. These factories will be part of TSMC's planned facility in Arizona, and they will contribute to what is being termed as a 'Mega Fab' inside the U.S. according to internal rumors sourced by UDN.”

Taipei, March 9 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, said on Tuesday that its soon-to-be-opened research and development center in Baoshan Township, Hsinchu, northern Taiwan will be involved in ongoing efforts to develop the advanced 3 nanometer process.
TSMC made the statement following claims in local news media that the chipmaker is planning to expand production using the 3nm process from the South Taiwan Science Park to Hsinchu, in a bid to meet strong global demand. The reports said the production expansion was being undertaken to compete for orders from U.S. clients such as Apple Inc. The R&D center in Baoshan, which is currently under construction, is scheduled to start operations later this year and is expected to hire about 8,000 R&D specialists, TSMC said..... https://focustaiwan.tw/sci-tech/202103090019

"Crucially the heightened US naval maneuvers in response follow on the heels of Tuesday Congressional testimony from Admiral Phil Davidson, the top US commander over the Indo-Pacific region, who gave his assessment that China will seek to takeover democratic Taiwan "within six years."
Here's what Adm. Davidson said during the controversial comments which elicited outrage from China's Foreign Ministry:
"I worry that they’re accelerating their ambitions to supplant the United States and our leadership role in the rules-based international order, which they’ve long said that they want to do that by 2050. I’m worried about them moving that target closer," Davidson testified.
"Taiwan is clearly one of their ambitions before then. And I think the threat is manifest during this decade, in fact in the next six years."
According to its latest social responsibility report, Taiwan Semi needs roughly 156,000 metric tons of water every day for its production facilities on the island. The company takes a number of measures to recycle water and uses other techniques to reduce the amount needed for each chip.

"...However, capacity shortages in the chip industry have over the past few months disrupted production at smartphone makers and automakers.
On Wednesday, Samsung said that its smartphone production in the second quarter could be affected by global chip shortages.
Seoul-based NH Investment and Securities Co said in a note on Thursday that the situation would start improving in the second half of this year, as operations at TSMC fabs in Taiwan and a Samsung fab in Austin, Texas, would return to normal, and new facilities of both companies would assume operations. https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/biz/archives/2021/03/22/2003754239
