Und Sätze von Frau Clinton wie "She said the US wanted to help PNG translate its natural resources into widespread prosperity." dürfte bei Somare eher als Drohung angekommen sein.

Hello PNG! Clinton visit highlights US partnership with PNG
Hillary Rodham Clinton, the US Secretary of State yesterday said the Government and people of Papua New Guinea were trusted partners with US today, and have been for more than 60 years. “That is why I see this visit as a privilege and a priority, a chance to help old friends confront new challenges together,” Mrs Clinton said. After a meeting with the Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare and his cabinet and the Governor-General Sir Paulius Matane, Mrs Clinton the US and PNG were working closely with the people of the Pacific Islands on so many issues of concern to America, to the region, and to the world. She said the two countries protect forests and fish stocks, fight the spread of HIV/AIDS and the two country’s militaries cooperate in the Pacific and elsewhere, and the Navy’s Pacific Partnership program helps people across the region. “We support projects to empower women leaders and stop human trafficking. We send students back and forth, including four Fulbright scholars from Papua New Guinea studying at top schools in America this year,” Mrs Clinton said. She said these were serious and wide-ranging partnerships and the US would soon be breaking ground on a new and larger Embassy compound in Port Moresby that can support her country’s deepening engagement across the region for years to come. “Our challenge now is to update our partnership as Papua New Guinea connects to global energy markets and confronts global climate change. “Thanks to its natural resources, Papua New Guinea has an opportunity to become a model for poverty reduction and global development and a strong regional leader. But getting there will require a sustained focus on good governance and a redoubled commitment to promote accountability, responsibility and transparency,” Mrs Clinton said. She said the US wanted to help PNG translate its natural resources into widespread prosperity. She said the Export-Import Bank of the United States approved the largest financing transaction in its history to help develop Papua New Guinea’s gas reserves. “And the State Department’s Energy Governance and Capacity Initiative is designed to help nations like yours handle the changes that you are likely to see. It focuses on things like technical training and how to build institutions that can manage new revenues wisely. “I thank the Prime Minister for his support for this program, and for his leadership in laying the groundwork for Papua New Guinea’s future as an energy producer,” she said. Mrs Clinton said climate change was another global challenge for the two country’s partnership. She said with its tropical forests, mangrove trees, and sea coasts, the government of PNG would be asked to help prevent climate change and to respond to its impacts. “That’s why, as soon as our Congress approves the funds, we plan to spend US$21 million (K53.76 million) over the next two years for climate change adaptation projects across the Pacific Island nations, including here in Papua New Guinea. “Yes, it is still a long journey from my country to yours. But in this century, our futures are more closely linked than ever before. I’m so glad to have this visit with you,” she concluded. |
