Encompass Funds Portfolio Manager Marshall Berol and Analyst Kevin Puil spend a lot of time examining junior mining companies for investment opportunities and they're pretty good at it. The Encompass Fund was up 139% in 2009 and it's up another 21% so far this year. In this exclusive interview with The Gold Report, we talk to Marshall and Kevin about how they choose junior gold stocks and whether or not the growing number of takeovers is influencing their decisions.

TGR: Two of the larger investment positions in the Encompass Fund are Avion Gold Corp. (TSX.V:AVR; OTCQX:AVGCF) and Exeter Resource Corp. (NYSE.A:XRA; TSX:XRC; Fkft:EXB). Do you expect these two companies to be taken over, or are these companies that just provide good value?

MB: They probably represent both aspects of what we were just talking about. I'll start with Exeter. Exeter Resource has the Caspiche project, a very large gold and copper deposit in the Andean Mountains of Chile. Malcolm Gissen, my co-manager, and I have visited the property. It's a very large project that has a 30, 40 million ounces of gold equivalent defined in a 43-101 resource report but several billion dollars in capital is necessary to turn that project into a mine. South of Caspiche, Kinross Gold and Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:ABX; TSX:ABX) own the Cerro Casale gold-copper project. And to the north Kinross has another existing mine. When we initially invested in Exeter several years ago, we felt they had some attractive projects and believed in the management. At the time, Exeter had projects in Chile and in Argentina. Earlier this year they spun off the Argentinean projects into Extorre Gold Mines Ltd. (TSX:XG; Fkft:E1R; OTCQX:EXGMF). Extorre is now moving toward production in southern Argentina.

Exeter management has said that it's likely that the Caspiche project in Chile will either be sold or the company will be sold, or Caspiche will be joint-ventured because it's likely beyond the capacity of Exeter to develop it as a mine. Some other larger company is likely to do that. That's probably a good example of a company that is not likely to be the one that brings the project into production.

Avion on the other hand is operating in West Africa. It has brought a couple of mines into production and has done some acquisitions. Kevin can give you some additional comments on Avion.

KP: Avion is one of those smaller junior producers that we talked about earlier that is reasonably priced and could attract some suitors. Avion has good cash flow. It's in a great neighborhood, and there is the potential to discover millions more ounces there.

TGR: Where are its mines located?

MB: Avion's operating mines are in Mali, West Africa and they are advancing projects that are in Burkina Faso, also in West Africa. They have just acquired some other projects in Burkina Faso.

TGR: Is there any jurisdiction risk there? Mali is relatively stable but Burkina Faso is a bit more on the edge.

KP: We've obviously done work on the political risk in Burkina Faso and are quite comfortable with that mine's jurisdiction.

"Avion Gold, you crossed the line. Avion crossed the $1.00/share threshold for the second time this week after announcing further drill results from the north end of the Tabakoto pit, where numerous underground high-grade gold-bearing cross-cutting structures have previously been identified. Results from drilling at the NW1 and NW2 zones include: 12.07 g/t Au over 12.5m and 3.58 g/t Au over 8.60m. Numerous other high-grade mineralized zones in the area have been intersected, returning 8.56 g/t Au over 7.5m and 67.71 g/t Au over 3.3m. . .These structures are the focus of the company's Tabakoto pit area exploration program and underground mine development.

Avion is in the process of placing the results in the context of the resources being modeled for the development of Tabakoto's underground mine workings. An updated reserve and resource estimate should be ready by year-end. A Bay Street analyst notes these results are an example of the superb work that Avion is doing to demonstrate the mineral potential of its concessions and should support a revaluation of Avion's shares. Avion is one of Canaccord Genuity Senior Mining Analyst Eric Zaunscherb's top picks as it still among the least expensive junior producers in his coverage universe; trading at 0.6x on a spot, 5% P/NAV basis, whereas the average is 0.94x P/NAV."

"Avion Gold announced new drill results from its Tabakoto project in Mail. The new results are from the northern end of the Tabakoto pit where NW-trending mineralized structures have been identified and tested. This area hosts the NW1 and NW2 cross structures, which have been traced for 50m–125m along strike and to ~300m depth.

. . .In 2010, Avion has completed over 453 core and RC drill holes totaling ~58,160m of drilling at its Tabakoto and Hounde (Burkina Faso) properties. This work has focused predominantly on the Dioulafoundou, Tabakoto, Djambaye II, Segala (all targets at Tabakoto project) and Vindaloo (target at Hounde project) areas. Drilling has recommenced on the Hounde property, Burkina Faso, which Avion acquired in October 2010 with ~4,000m of further drilling planned. The initial program led to the definition of a resource of 1.48 Moz. in the M&I category and 1.19 Moz. in the Inferred category. . .Avion's exploration program at its Mali holdings has been very successful with 75% of the drill holes intersecting mineralization. With a sizable land package remaining to be explored, the company believes there is significant upside to add to its resource."

Avion Gold habe im letzten Jahr die Gold-Förderung in ihrer Liegenschaft in Mali aufgenommen. Für das laufende Gesamtjahr habe das Management einen Ausstoß am oberen Ende der bisherigen Guidance von 77.000 bis 85.000 Unzen in Aussicht gestellt, nach 51.000 Unzen im Vorjahr.

Langfristig plane die Gesellschaft die Produktion auf 200.000 Unzen im Jahr hochzufahren. Hierfür würden bereits aussichtsreiche Liegenschaften erkundet.

Die Aktie von Avion Gold verfügt trotz der zuletzt starken Kursentwicklung noch über reichlich Potenzial, so die Experten von "Der Aktionär". Das Kursziel werde bei 1,20 Euro gesehen. Ein Stopp sollte bei 0,51 Euro gesetzt werden.

Die Gold Importe der Volksrepublik China werden sich innerhalb der nächsten 10 Jahre auf jährlich 209 Tonnen mehr als verfünffachen, dies sagte Shen Xiangrong, Vorstand bei Shanghai Gold Exchange heute in einem Interview mit dem Wirtschaftsmagazin „Bloomberg“.

„Die Erwartung einer höheren Inflationsrate hat ein großes Interesse unter den Investoren erzeigt physisches Gold zu besitzen, dies wird zu höheren Importen führen,“ betonte Shen. China importierte im Jahr 2009 45 Tonnen Gold.

"[Avion] is a company that bought a suite of assets that were technically challenged, and has executed a plan to unlock that value. . .The company has an excellent exploration team that has been adding ounces through the drill bit. But the reason people buy this story is because of cash flow.

There is quite a bit of strip associated with production (the ore), and the cash costs are elevated because of that. They've typically been around $650. You should see cash costs average around $550 for the next couple of quarters. My estimate is that the company has 12 months of open-pit mining and 7–10 years of underground. And if it can make the underground work, there is potential for the underground mine life to grow as Avion drills at depth."
