Samsung Leads Chaebol's Drive to Relieve Tsunami Disaster Domestic companies continue to send relief goods to the tsunami-hit East-Asian regions, with Samsung Electronics announcing Wednesday that it has sent US$1 million (W1.04 billion) worth of relief goods and supplies to Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India, and Sri Lanka. Samsung will also form teams to conduct volunteer work to help out the disaster-struck countries. Samsung Indonesia has started a fundraising campaign, while its Malaysian operation plans to offer free after-service to areas that have been badly hit. Samsung Thailand, meanwhile, has established links with the Thai government's official help center to provide aid.
LG Electronics India will send $57,000 and its Thai branch is holding a charity event to amass relief funds. LG also plans to send eight medical personnel to Indian hospitals and send medical aid and clothes.
Officials at Eland Welfare Center said they would send W100 million and W500 million worth of relief goods to Indonesia and Sri Lanka, respectively.
Kyungnam Corporation will also donate W50 million in relief funds to the Sri Lankan government. The corporation plans to send 350 units of construction facilities and 200 personnel to help with reconstruction work. Kyungnam is currently conducting business in Sri Lanka, building roads and hospitals, but the massive earthquake did not affect its operations there.
Kyobo Life Insurance contributed W20 million to the Korea Food for the Hungry International to help victims.
