<!--articledetails-->Japanese computer and electronics maker Fujitsu says it will sell its liquid crystal display (LCD) operations to Sharp Corp., ceding ground to its rival which leads in the flat screen stechnology.

Fujitsu group companies would transfer their LCD research and development, manufacturing and sales operations to Sharp.

Fujitsu decided to pull out after seeing declining profitability at its LCD subsidiary and "determined that the best way to realize the full potential of this business is by transferring it to the leading company in LCDs, Sharp," a joint statement said yesterday.

"Sharp and Fujitsu are now discussing details of a definitive agreement, which they expect to complete in March," the statement said. The terms of the deal were not given.

"The planned transfer will further expand Sharp's development and production capabilities in the small- and mid-size LCD segment," the statement said.

LCDs, used primarily for smaller high-resolution televisions, is also in competition for buyers with plasma displays, a technology used for wider-screen sets.

Fujitsu pioneered flat screens more than 30 years ago but the leaders in plasma diplay are now South Korean companies Samsung and LG Electronics.

Japanese companies Matsushita and Hitachi - number one and two in the plasma display business in Japan but ranked third and fourth worldwide - said Monday they would join forces in the sector to cut costs and face up to the South Korean challenge.

Solarzellenproduktion: Sharp ist erneut Weltmarktführer
Sharp ist laut der neuesten Studie des US-Informationsdienstes "PV-News" mit einer Produktion von 324 Megawatt (MW) im Jahr 2004 seit nunmehr fünf Jahren Weltmarktführer bei der Herstellung von Solarzellen. Das berichtet das Unternehmen in einer Pressemitteilung.  Die weltweite Photovoltaik-Produktion überschritt im Jahr 2004 erstmalig die Gigawattgrenze.


400 Megawatt Gesamtproduktionskapazität Anfang 2005

Laut PV-News betrug die Solarzellenproduktion von Sharp 2003 noch 198 MW, 2004 konnte sie auf 324 MW ausgebaut werden. Dies entspreche einem globalen Marktanteil von 27,1 Prozent und sei somit höher, als die Produktion der nächsten drei Mitbewerber zusammen. Im Vergleich zur letzten Studie habe Sharp seinen Marktanteil um 0,4 Prozent gesteigert (2003: 26,7 Prozent). Doch die Entwicklung sei nicht stehengeblieben: Bereits Anfang 2005 erreichte Sharp nach eigenen Angaben eine Gesamtproduktionskapazität von 400 Megawatt.


Weltweite Solarzellenproduktion 2004: 1.194 Megawatt

Seit 1985 gibt der Amerikaner Paul D. Maycock mit den "PV-News" einen jährlichen Überblick über den weltweiten Photovoltaikmarkt. Die neue Studie bescheinigt der Branche für 2004 ein Wachstum auf mehr als ein Gigawatt. Die weltweite Solarzellenproduktion von 1.194 Megawatt verteilt sich auf Japan mit 618 Megawatt, gefolgt von Europa mit 308 Megawatt und den USA mit 139 Megawatt. 129 Megawatt werden in weiteren Ländern produziert, vor allem in China, Australien und Indien.
