Dezentrale Energieerzeugung birgt Probleme

Was also tun?

Was also tun?

Herzlichst Ihr

H2 is Back
3/4/13WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Energy soon will launch a campaign to promote hydrogen cars, embracing a technology that was favored by the administration of President George W. Bush but initially shunned under Barack Obama.

The project is tentatively called H2USA, in reference to the chemical symbol for hydrogen gas. The DOE is signing up automakers, suppliers and other companies that want to see hydrogen fuel cell vehicles hit the marketplace.

"There still are a lot of challenges. Infrastructure is critical," said Sunita Satyapal, program manager for fuel cell technologies at the DOE. "But the fact that a number of entities are coming together to work together through this partnership is a very positive sign."

H2USA will lack the hefty resources of past forays into fuel cells, such as George W. Bush's FreedomCAR initiative. But automakers hope the project marks a complete about-face by an administration that came into office several years ago and slashed its predecessor's funding for the technology.

"Even if it's not as robust as we would like to see, it's still a very good, meaningful move," said Michael Stanton, president of the Association of Global Automakers.

His group's member companies include Honda, Hyundai and Toyota, all three of which plan to start selling fuel cell electric vehicles within a few years.

Automakers have asked the Obama administration to be more positive about fuel cells, even if battery-powered electric vehicles continue to get the lion's share of funding. Even a symbolic gesture can push a technology forward, they say.

"Signals," said Britta Gross, director of global energy systems and infrastructure commercialization at General Motors, when asked why the Obama administration's stance matters. "Signals to infrastructure providers. Signals to states. This is true for any technology: Signals that show the direction and the strategy and the importance are very important. It's a confidence issue. It's a comfort issue."

BOULDER, Colo.–Over the past year, the stationary fuel cell industry has experienced healthy growth due to a surge in U.S. and foreign government interest in reliable and resilient energy sources. The sector is now at a point where, if all government policy relevant to stationary fuel cells was carried out, the global market potential would surpass three gigawatts (GW) in 2013, and increasing to more than 50 GW by 2020. According to a new report from Pike Research, a part of Navigant’s Energy Practice, the number of stationary fuel cells shipped annually will increase from 21,000 in 2012 to more than 350,000 by 2022.

“While a number of companies have exited the fuel cell sector in the last year, government mandates for cleaner and more resilient power production are fueling a sharp increase in market demand,” says research director Kerry-Ann Adamson. “At the same time, a number of new business models are being adopted in order to meet this demand, including energy service companies, independent power producers, and cooperative energy companies. These are making stationary fuel cells a much more standardized option that can be considered as part of the overall energy mix.”

Overall, in terms of addressing market need, 2012 has seen a growing realism entering the stationary fuel cell industry, according to the report. Through late 2011, many fuel cell providers continued to assume that if they created a product, the market would change its requirements and adopt the new system. This unrealistic assessment of the market has subsided, and companies are creating products for markets where real needs exists—using locally available fuels, systems created to be maintained by local engineers, and systems that do not require very limited operating temperature ranges.

Obama Proposes $2-Billion Fund For Alternative Fuel Vehicles, No Mention Of Hydrogen

“The only way to break this cycle of spiking gas prices — the only way to break that cycle for good — is to shift our cars entirely, our cars and trucks, off oil,”

So said President Obama during a speech in Illinois, where he outlined a plan to provide $200 million a year for 10 years to a fund that would promote the development of alternative fuel vehicles. The funds would be provided by royalties from oil drilling on the Out Continental Shelf.

One notable omission from his remarks was the absence of any mention of hydrogen vehicles. Using his noted flair for rhetoric, Obama laid out his vision petroleum-free future while ignoring the fact that multiple OEMs are gearing up for a big push into fuel-cell technology

We can support scientists who are designing new engines that are more energy efficient; support scientists that are developing cheaper batteries that can go farther on a single charge; support scientists and engineers that are devising new ways to fuel our cars and trucks with new sources of clean energy — like advanced biofuels and natural gas — so drivers can one day go coast to coast without using a drop of oil.

One insider suggested that the lack of love for hydrogen has been a result of “not invented here syndrome” that is a hold over of the Bush 43 administration. While Dubya was fond of hydrogen as an alternative fuel, Obama and former Energy Secretary Steven Chu are said to be unfriendly, bordering on hostile, to the idea of hydrogen fuel cells. Unfortunately, many feel that a government partnership with the private sector will be the key to a hydrogen infrastructure breakthrough – but those parties feel that this is more likely than a cost effective, right-sized battery pack capable for a 500 mile range.

FuelCell Energy: An Overlooked Bright Spot
Mar 25 2013, 09:27  | 1 comment  |  about: FCEL
Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, and no plans to initiate any positions within the next 72 hours. (More...)

With more than 300 megawatts of power generation capacity installed or in backlog, FuelCell Energy (FCEL) is a global leader in providing ultra-clean baseload distributed generation to utilities, industrial operations, universities, municipal water treatment facilities, government installations and other customers around the world. The company's power plants have generated more than 1.5 billion kilowatt hours of ultra-clean power using a variety of fuels including renewable biogas from wastewater treatment and food processing, as well as clean natural gas

On March 11, 2013, FCEL announced its first quarter ending January 31, 2013 results. On the surface, there's little to be excited about. Big sales but with bigger losses. Gross profits turned to gross losses, meaning, had the company not had any revenue whatsoever its income statement would have looked better. Backlog was up substantially, but without even turning a positive gross profit and worse with huge net losses it would seem to be hopeless for it to ever show decent results and survive long term.

My bearish feeling began to shift with the conference call. Buried in there is a bright spot that actually makes me lean bullish on FCEL and has me watching very closely. This bright spot could make FCEL a sleeper stock that pleasantly surprises going forward. The call, similar to the earnings PR, early on began to explain:

an isolated manufacturing issue, that was not anticipated and impacted our margins

My reactionary thoughts were: Okay, fine. But FCEL's margins have never been very impressive to begin with and certainly not high enough to have any meaningful effect on its huge quarterly net losses. Next:

margins in the quarter were impacted by an unfavorable product mix compared to the prior year as we -- and we incurred period costs related to the production ramp. This trend will reverse in the second quarter as the company is in the process of increasing the production rate by 25%, which will lead to higher revenues and expanding margins.

Okay, higher margins AND higher revenue. I'm listening. So what? Lots and lots of talk about projects and their various stages of completion then all the way down buried deep in the questions and answers section. That's where the bright spot is and also the most meaningful and overlooked metric was by Michael S. Bishop, CFO:

When we think about the business model going out a couple of quarters, we're targeting margins in the double digit range. So we would expect nice expansion here during the rest of the fiscal year.

Double digit margins, if achieved, for FCEL is a game changer. Here's a company with a long history of great sales with paper-thin margins at best. With double-digit profit margins, suddenly their large sales, growth, and backlog become meaningful. Backlog had a giant leap over the three-month period going from $319 million on October 31, 2012 to $428 million as of January 31, 2013. Filling that backlog at 10% profit margins (or better) would return a large amount of much needed cash to FCEL's bottom line.

Also interesting is that when pressed further on the raise in margins to double digit levels two quarters out, CEO Arthur A. Bottone stated that investors will start to see the leverage in margins this coming quarter.

FCEL has a lot of work to do and a long way to go to reach full company profitability, if ever, but with the stock in the dumps for years on end, any perceived turnaround in hope or prospects could make for a strong bounce. I take CEO Bottone at his word that FCEL will begin to show a turnaround with its next report.

27 New Hydrogen Stations Worldwide in 2012

25 MAR 2013

In 2012, 27 new hydrogen refuelling stations were opened worldwide, bringing the number of hydrogen stations in service to a total of 208 by March 2013. That is the conclusion of the fifth annual assessment by H2stations.org, a site run by Ludwig-Bolkow-Systemtechnik (LBST) and TÜV SÜD.

Eight of the new stations are in North America, three in Asia, and Europe has sixteen new stations, five of which are in Germany. These are the stations of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) project in Hamburg, Berlin and Dusseldorf. In March 2013, a hydrogen station also opened in Stuttgart and Germany thus currently has 33 hydrogen refuelling stations in operation. Austria opened its third hydrogen refuelling station in 2012 and Turkey celebrated its first hydrogen station.

To LBST’s best knowlede, there are currently a total of 80 operational stations in Europe, 76 in North America, three in South America and 49 in Asia. Since hydrogen-fuelled vehicles are generally early in the commercialisation process and mainly being used in field tests and trials at the moment coordination with the station operators is required for use; classification of ‘public’ and ‘private’ gas stations is therefore not yet being made.

In many countries there are plans for expansion of hydrogen refuelling networks. Another new addition to the list is Slovenia, where in 2012 concrete plans were published for two stations. Plans for new stations at scheduled locations will be monitored and all available information will be published at www.H2stations.org. This currently applies to 104 stations worldwide (43 in North America, seven in Asia, 54 in Europe and seven in Germany).

H2stations.org monitors stations in operation worldwide and information can be accessed for free through interactive maps. Plans to shut down hydrogen stations are also tracked along with information on completed projects, providing a reference for the history of hydrogen infrastructure development to date. The database is updated continuously, including changes to existing service stations. Currently detailed information on 475 stations is provided. TÜV SÜD and LBST also make further information available through their joint Hydrogen and Fuel Portal (www.netinform.de/H2).

2018: Transparency Market Research

ALBANY, New York, April 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

According to a new market report published by Transparency Market Research
(http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com) "Combined Heat And Power (CHP) Installation
Market by Product (Large-scale CHP, Micro-CHP), by Application (Residential, Commercial
& Industrial), Technology (Combined Cycle, Combustion/Gas, Steam, Fuel Cell etc)- Global
Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast, 2012 - 2018," global CHP
demand was 452.9 GW in 2011 and is expected to reach 1,219.1 GW in 2018, growing at a
CAGR of 15.3% from 2012 to 2018. In terms of revenue, the CHP installation market is
expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.7% from 2012 to 2018.

   Browse the full report at
http://www.transparencymarketresearch.com/combined-heat-and-power.html

CHP fuels estimated and analyzed in this study include natural gas, coal, biomass,
and others (wood, oil and process waste heat). Abundant supply of natural gas at
competitive prices, a favorable regulatory scenario and increasing application scope are
expected to drive CHP systems demand over the next five years. However, CHP installation
is a highly capital intensive process carrying significant risk value, which is expected
to act as a barrier to market growth in the near future. The interconnection standards
between utilities and cogeneration systems vary regionally. This makes it difficult for
CHP technology companies to manufacture components and makes cogeneration system
installation more complex and costly.

Industrial applications dominated the CHP systems market and accounted for 67.8% of
the overall demand in 2011. Commercial applications followed industrial in terms of
volume and are expected to grow at a CAGR of 15.9% from 2012 to 2018.

FuelCell Energy Inc. plans to complete a production ramp up by May 1, the company said on Thursday.

The increase in production of its fuel cells will take the manufacturer's output to 70 megawatts a year, up close to 20 megawatts from 2012 levels.

Added business is expected to push sales at the company — which is headquartered in Danbury and has manufacturing facilities in Torrington — to about $39 million for the second quarter ending April 30 from $24.2 million in the same quarter last year.

With added sales volumes, the company is closing in on making a profit for the first time in its history, and also being the first fuel cell company to do so.

"The ramp of the business and hiring is directly related to demand in Connecticut such as a 14.9 megawatt fuel cell park in Bridgeport as well as overseas demand and a strong project pipeline," Chip Bottone, chief executive of FuelCell Energy, said in a written statement.

The company's fuel cells extract hydrogen from natural gas. The hydrogen, sent through the fuel cell, produces electricity and heat with virtually no pollutants. FuelCell Energy employs about 240 employees in Danbury and 295 in Torrington, with an about 20 percent increase in employment in Torrington in the past six months.

"We attract employees from around the state including 82 different towns in 7 of the 8 counties in Connecticut," Darrell Bradford, head of human resources for the company, said in a statement.

FuelCell Energy has been in Connecticut since 1969, and employs more than 600 worldwide.

The company was up 6.57 percent to 90 cents at market close on the NASDAQ.
