SolarWorld Industries of America Inc. was awarded $82.2 million in federal tax credits Friday related to the recent expansion of its Hillsboro manufacturing plant.
The Germany-based photovoltaic equipment manufacturer was one of at least three Oregon companies to receive a share of $2.3 billion in tax credits for clean energy manufacturing announced Friday by President Barack Obama. The tax credits are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, otherwise known as the federal stimulus bill.
The other known Oregon recipients:
• Pacific Metal Fab LLC of Eugene, which received $303,801 for re-equipping and expanding its manufacturing plant to make tanks, plumbing modules and frames for passive solar water heaters.
• Centrosolar Oregon LLC, a subsidiary of Germany-based solar module-maker Centrosolar Group AG, which received $4,740,000 for building a manufacturing plant in Gresham to make photovoltaic solar modules.
SolarWorld’s $82.2 million was one of the highest tax credit allocations announced Friday.
Spokesman Ben Santarris said that because the company competes globally, the federal tax credits help improve the company’s “financial prospects for a thorough going manufacturing plant on U.S. soil in solar technology.”
The tax credits were awarded to help SolarWorld achieve its ongoing goal of having a plant that employs 1,000, produces 500 megawatts of capacity, and represents a $500 million investment by 2011.
In October, SolarWorld unveiled a 210,000-square-foot addition to its Hillsboro plant that made it the only monocrystalline solar manufacturing plant in the United States to produce every phase of solar panel manufacturing.
The new space is in addition to 480,000-square-feet of manufacturing space that opened just a year earlier.
