Go-Jek's earlier investors are Sequoia India, Northstar Group, DST Global, NSI Ventures, Rakuten Ventures and Formation Group.

Shane Chesson, one of Go-Jek’s first investors told the press that “having this new group of global investors on board will further accelerate Go-Jek’s innovation and allow Go-Jek to solidify its position as an Indonesian tech leader.”

We’re big, but it’s just the beginning.

Indonesia-based Go-Jek, the motorbike taxis on-demand company that competes with Uber and Grab, has confirmed that it has raised upwards of $550 million in new funding. It also hinted that it may expand to other parts of Southeast Asia for the first time.

The company’s valuation was not disclosed, but we reported earlier than it values Go-Jek at $1.3 billion post-money.

The money was provided by new investors KKR, Warburg Pincus, Farallon Capital and Capital Group Private Markets. Existing investors Sequoia India, Northstar Group, DST Global, NSI Ventures, Rakuten Ventures and Formation Group also took part.

"Djamel Agaou (CEO von Viber): Unlike other messaging apps, we take privacy and security seriously and it is the core of our value proposition to users. Viber can’t read personal chats – including one-on-one chats, group chats, audio and video calls.
We simply can’t access messages since we use end-to-end encryption by default. This means that all private and group communications are completely encrypted so that only users and the people they’re talking to can read or hear them."

“We think this will be the next big revolution in content. People don’t understand why the need to wait three or four months [to see a movie],” he said. “After one month the only winner is piracy. I see a big opportunity in moving the digital window closer to the cinema window.”

In order to push this forwards, Rakuten is co-investing in producing movies that it can then bring to its own platform. The company will invest around €2 million this year in two or three projects that will come to fruition in the second half, according to Roca.

“We are going to co-invest in movie productions to accelerate the created of this reduced window between cinema and digital,” he said.

Written by Stuart Thomson
26 March 2018

CEO Jacinto Roca talked exclusively with Stuart Thomson about his plans.

Rakuten TV, the transactional video-on-demand service provider that currently operates in 12 international territories, has big plans to expand its offering, including the possible launch of a subscription service outside of Spain for the first time and a push to create “the cinema experience at home” through shortening the window between cinema distribution and the appearance of movies on digital platforms.

According to CEO Jacinto Roca, Rakuten TV now has over five million registered users, with about 20% being active in any one year. Revenues are growing by 40% year-on-year, driven by take-up of the service in the UK market, he says. Growth in also strong in Spain, and relatively strong in Germany and France thanks the presence of its e-commerce giant parent, Rakuten, in those markets. Elsewhere, says Roca, growth is “healthy but slower”.

Rakuten TV mulls wider European expansion

Written by Andrew McDonald
09 November 2017
.
Speaking exclusively to TBI’s sister title Digital TV Europe, Rakuten TV CEO Jacinto Roca (pictured) said “we have the intention to launch but we don’t have concrete plans yet”.
Roca said that heading into next year, the firm might consider increasing its number of territories with a view to expanding into the Nordics and Eastern Europe.

“The idea is to cover Europe as a whole,” said Roca. “That will be the main priority. I think that to launch in these countries we may consider M&A opportunities as well.”

Currently Rakuten TV is live in twelve European countries, including its home and largest market of Spain, and other major European countries like the UK, Germany, Spain, France and Italy.

63718 Postings, 7371 Tage LibudaRakuten ist auch Go-Jek beteiligt

Go-Jek began in 2010 as a call centre enabling riders to order an ojek by phone. In 2014, inspired by the success of Uber and other ride-sharing platforms, Makarim launched Go-Jek as a smartphone app. But unlike Uber and Grab, which had both feet firmly planted in transportation at launch and added other services later, Makarim had a menu in mind from the outset. Ride-sharing services alone, he reasoned, would not generate sufficient network effects to achieve lift-off and scale. Business would slump outside the rush hours. To keep drivers busy all day and increase demand, Go-Jek also offered Go-Send (a courier service) and Go-Food (food delivery).
As Makarim explained to me, “All three are the same essentially: a motorcycle from A to B. The difference is in the sense that one is picking up a human and one is picking up a package.”

63718 Postings, 7371 Tage LibudaViber becoming Swiss army knive of app market

Messaging apps are big business and many of them have moved into providing far more services for users beyond traditional peer-to-peer messaging, such as chatbots and banking services. This move from messaging apps into becoming the Swiss army knives of the app market has seen the number of app users grow to around 2.01bn and is expected to reach 2.48bn by 2021, according to Statista.

One app that reaches a large number of those using messaging apps globally is Viber. The cross-platform, community-focused instant messaging platform boasts over 1bn users and is the most used messaging app in Russia, as well as being hugely popular in the Middle East.
