"As Shibusawa points out Japanese households hold some 980 trillion yen ($8.8 trillion) in cash and deposits. That represents an enormous business opportunity. One startup that’s focused on this mountain of wealth while benefitting from Japan’s new openness is TORANOTEC, a Tokyo-based asset management firm founded in 2016. Reflecting a sense of wild passion for investing, the company’s name incorporates tora, Japanese for “tiger.”

In 2017, the company launched TORANOKO, a smartphone app that lets users invest small change from credit card payments. If a user buys something for 180 yen, for instance, the amount could be rounded up to 200 yen and the 20 yen difference would go into an investment fund matching the user’s tolerance for risk. Aside from being able to invest as little as 1 yen, another unique feature of the app is that users can invest the cash equivalent of points from Japanese loyalty programs such as ANA Group’s ANA Mileage Club air miles.

“We saw a real opportunity in the Japanese market to create an entry point for wealth management accessibility for everyone,” says Justin Balogh, president and CEO of TORANOTEC. “Japan has a history of being a financial center but despite its status as a developed market there are gaps for entry-level investors.”

62057 Postings, 7030 Tage LibudaWhy we "Walk Together" with Rakuten Mobile

By Mats Nordlund, CEO & Co-founder, Netrounds

The whole world is fascinated by Rakuten Mobile and the network they are rolling out in Japan. At Netrounds, we are also fascinated. And honored. Honored to announce that Rakuten Mobile has selected our software solution to guarantee quality of services with cost-efficient network operations.

Rakuten Mobile has commercialized the world’s first open radio access network (OpenRAN) architecture, built on off-the-shelf hardware, with more than 180 virtual network functions. This makes Rakuten Mobile the world’s largest telco cloud provider. Their architecture is characterized by thousands of edge data centers, where Netrounds’ small footprint and virtual test agents are automatically deployed during network rollout to validate proper turn-up of the connections towards the radio sites, as well as to provide operations teams with real-time performance indicators for the fronthaul and backhaul data planes of the radio access network.

Rakuten intends to go global with their cloud connectivity platform to globalize their footprint outside of Japan. They want to become a connectivity enabler, and not necessarily a traditional telecommunications operator, as Tareq Amin, CTO of Rakuten Mobile explained at the TIP Summit in Amsterdam in November.

"In October of the same year as Rakuten's entry, a new rule was introduced to encourage competition among companies and reduce fees, but due to delays in the full-scale launch of Rakuten's services, fees were expected to be as high as expected. It is pointed out that it has not gone down.

For this reason, the rates that Rakuten will show in the future, and the responses of the three major companies based on that, are attracting attention."

der einzige Engpass ist, ist dieser Engpass aus meiner Sicht fast ein Nonevent.

„It is understood that on no fewer than three occasions, the government directed Rakuten Mobile to speed up the pace of its rollout after it admitted that its original plan to deploy 3,432 base stations by March next year was behind schedule. The number was just 653 as at 6 September and puts it at odds with the terms and conditions of its licence award in April 2018.

Rakuten to launch full-scale mobile phone services in Japan in April

Jan 7, 2020

Rakuten Inc. aims to launch full mobile phone carrier services in April, according to Hiroshi Mikitani, the head of the major cybermall operator.

The Rakuten group initially planned to begin mobile services last Oct. 1 but postponed the move due to a delay in establishing base stations.

“We are fully preparing to offer stable mobile services,” Mikitani told reporters Monday in Tokyo.
Rakuten Mobile Inc., the operator of the mobile phone business, was repeatedly slapped with administrative guidances by the communications ministry last year over the delays in setting up base stations.

Did you know that after grocery shopping, fashion represents the largest e-commerce segment globally? And it’s growing rapidly. According to Statista, the market is already valued at over half a trillion dollars annually and is expected to be worth $922 billion by the end of 2023.

Since Rakuten first launched its online marketplace in 1997, fashion has been one of its most popular segments. In 2020, the company will double-down on its fashion focus as the title sponsor of one of the world’s premier fashion events, Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo. 2020 Autumn/Winter collections will hit the runway in mid-March in the trendy Tokyo fashion hubs of Shibuya and Omotesando.

62057 Postings, 7030 Tage LibudaLyft teamed up with JPMorgan Chase

Lyft Inc on Wednesday said it has teamed up with JPMorgan Chase & Co to offer extended rewards to Chase customers using their credit cards to pay for Lyft rides.

The ride-hailing company said the partnership was aimed at attracting and retaining high-value riders who travel often and use its services frequently.

The announcement comes after Lyft's management in October said it planned to expand its partnership with corporations to incentivize business travelers who outspend other riders.

Under the new offer, launching on Jan 13, members of Chase's Sapphire Reserve credit card will earn 10 rewards point on every dollar they spend on Lyft rides.

That's up from the current three rewards point those card holders earn on travel expenses, which include trips with Lyft and Uber.

JPMorgan Chase on Wednesday raised the price for its Chase Sapphire Reserve card by as much as $100 a year, the bank's cardholder agreement showed. The card now costs between $450 and $550 in annual fees.

Sapphire Reserve customers will also receive a free one-year membership of Lyft's subscription service which at $19.99 a month offers savings on rides and other benefits.

Rakuten Mobile has stated that the facility is in spécialiserait in the latest computer technology – a model for the next generation for the Internet.

Dr Blesson Varghese, lecturer in the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and a fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Communications and Information Technology at Queen’s, is leading the project. A team of PhD students is also involved.

“As billions of devices are getting connected to the internet, we need more sustainable and scalable architectures for computing, and they must not solely rely on distant centralised clouds,” Dr Varghese said.

“The computer of edge closer to some of the application services to users at the edge of the network.
“This will make applications more responsive and reduce bandwidth demand.”

Dr Pierre Imai, head of research and innovation at Rakuten Mobile, added: “Through our collaboration with Queen’s University, we have the opportunity to work with leading researchers in the edge computing field.

“The results should allow us to provide a better service and a greater level of convenience to our customers.”

FCC’s Ajit Pai met with Rakuten executives

Jan 7, 2020 10:11pm

LAS VEGAS — In his first speaking engagement at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) since he became the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in 2017, Ajit Pai said that he has “met with Rakuten” and discussed wireless security issues with company executives. Rakuten Mobile is building a 4G/5G greenfield network in Japan based on open software and virtualization technologies.

Pai said, “There’s no American-based supplier of equipment. But people are innovating to virtualize the radio access network and other parts of the 5G network. I’ve met with Rakuten. I just met recently with Altiostar, a Boston-based company.”

He indicated that 5G with its multitude of small cells and edge compute locations “increases the attack surface,” in terms of security. Pai is interested in companies such as Rakuten and Altiostar because they are working on next-generation wireless networks that replace proprietary hardware with software stacks that can run on generic hardware. He said these virtualized networks will help to bypass some security issues and also decrease the cost of building 5G networks.

“Software is something America has really led on,” said Pai. Although Rakuten is a Japanese company, it’s using vendors from all around the world, including Altiostar, which is a U.S.-based vendor.
