Japanese e-commerce firm Rakuten announced on Tuesday it is acquiring Ebates for $1 billion.

The acquisition, which Rakuten hinted at last week, is part of the Japanese company?s push to grow its base beyond its domestic market and hopefully, become a global player. Having made some $1.2 billion acquisitions to date along these lines, this is Rakuten?s most ambitious move to date.

However, investors are dubious that the company can absorb yet another foreign acquisition, much less one the size of Ebates, despite Rakuten?s strong cash position.
Then there is the ever-present Amazon, which dominates the e-commerce market in the U.S. Few believe it will falter in the face of Chinese giant Alibaba, much less a Rakuten-Ebates combo.

Rakuten Goes Forth

Not surprisingly, Rakuten says it is undaunted. For starters, it has assembled a very interesting mix of acquisitions. There is messaging app Viber, which it purchased for $900 million in February, the Canadian ebook offering Kobo, Spanish video service, Viki, a digital content platform and

As part of the tie-up, Robin platform will help Rakuten in automating deployment, scaling and lifecycle management that accelerate service delivery, improving the end-user experience, and also reducing infrastructure and operational costs of telco and service delivery applications.

The platform is said to help Rakuten create a cloud-native deployment model that is optimized with Robin?s application-aware storage and carrier-grade networking.

For the uninitiated, patent-protected technology is built upon Kubernetes and powers the platform for IT transformation used by global customers such as USAA, SAP, Sabre, BNP Paribas and Palo Alto Networks.

?They are going to enter and they are going to disrupt the section. The likelihood that someone will enter your market is pretty high.? And that dynamic puts the impetus on telcos to ?transition now? to open, cloud-native networks. He gave the example of Telefonica as a multinational telco that ?decided not to wait.?

Telefonica and Rakuten are both investors in Altiostar.

Singapore fintech startup Coda Payments raises over $20m

Singapore-based payments service provider Coda Payments announced that it?s bagged an investment of more than US$20 million in a deal led by private equity asset manager Apis Partners through its Apis Growth Fund II.

Founded in 2011, Coda helps publishers such as Tencent, Garena, and Netflix monetize games and other digital content. Through Codapay, Coda allows these companies to accept more than 100 payment methods on their websites, including direct carrier billing, bank or ATM transfer, cash payments at convenience stores, online vouchers, and e-wallets.

It also operates Codashop, a platform where users can top up their game credits and other digital services. It also offers a white-label version of Codashop, which allows ecommerce sites to offer a wide range of digital content.

In April, the company said it has been profitable for around a year and a half. Since it began processing transactions in 2013, Coda claims to have tripled the total value of payments that it handles annually on average.

It has raised at least US$5.3 million from a number of funding rounds, according to data from Crunchbase. Its existing backers include GMO Global Payment Fund, Rakuten Ventures, CyberAgent Ventures, and Golden Gate Ventures, among others.

dass die m.E. erfolgsversprechenden Investitionen im Mobile-Bereich nicht positiv, sondern negativ bewertet werden, was ich bei aller Unsicherheit, die hinsichtlich des Erfolges besteht, als absurd ansehe.

Da Rakuten den Kapitalmarkt m.E. richtigerweise nicht in Anspruch zu nehmen gedenkt, sondern Investitionen ausschließlich aus dem Cash Flow und über Anleihen stemmt, haben die auch wenig Interesse an der Kursentwicklung, Daher erfährt man auch nichts über die Vorgänge im Mobile-Bereich - denn das würde vermutlich der Konkurrenz nützen, Rakuten als Unternehmen aber nicht und auch nicht den Großaktionären, die ihren Bestand nicht verändern wollen.
