....For weeks now, the finance minister, wheelchair-bound for a quarter of a century, has been almost tacitly watching the scene. Nobody knows what he’s really up to. That should bother Merkel far more than the blustering Horst Seehofer, head of Bavaria and the Christian Social Union party..... So far, he has not done what he is best at: explain things from a traditional, conservative line of thinking that differs from Merkel’s, and use his party stature to reassure party officials. Instead, he has publicly declined new deficits or tax rises to foot the refugee bill, effectively limiting the chancellor’s room to maneuver.And why? That’s the million dollar question in Berlin these days. |
