BEIJING--Computer maker Lenovo Group Ltd. (0992.HK) and data storage provider EMC Corp. (EMC) will cooperate on developing and retailing servers and network storage, the companies said in a joint statement Wednesday.
Lenovo and EMC are also forming a joint venture to provide network-attached storage to small and medium sized companies and enterprise customers, the statement said. A person familiar with the matter said Lenovo will hold a 51% stake in the JV and EMC 49%.
The move will grow EMC's distribution channels for its data-storage business in China and other developing markets, while helping Lenovo to expand its server sales and enterprise offerings to customers. Although servers remain a small part of Lenovo's business, analysts said it has been aggressively seeking to expand in the sector.
Lenovo will first offer EMC's network storage to customers in China before expanding the service to other markets, it said in the statement.
"The relationship with Lenovo represents a powerful opportunity for EMC to significantly expand our presence in China, a vibrant and very important market, and extend it to other parts of the world over time," EMC Chief Executive Joe Tucci said in the statement.
Financial terms of the venture weren't mentioned.
