Vancouver junior Bear Creek may be a top primary silver miner by 2014

With two advanced silver deposits, including a potential world-class mine, and 320 million reserve ounces, Bear Creek may be on the fast track as a future major silver miner.

RENO, NV -

With more than 63 million ounces of proven and probable reserves and an additional 72.8 million ounces of measured and indicated resources in the Santa Ana silver deposit alone, junior explorer Bear Creek Mining could find itself one of the world's top primary silver miners by 2014.

During a conference call Thursday, Bear Creek officials said that between the Santa Ana and Corani deposits, the company could mine 15 million to 20 million ounces of Peruvian silver annually by 2014.

A 43-101 feasibility study for the Santa Ana silver deposit in southern Peru estimates a $68.8 million capex for an open-pit mining project with an average annual production of 3.6 million ounces of silver over an 11-year mine life.

"This project we just can't move fast enough," Bear Creek President Andrew T. Swarthout told analysts during a conference call Thursday.

Swarthout said first production for Santa Ana is slated for mid-2012.

Meanwhile, Bear Creek officials told analysts Corani "is a much larger project" and is being touted by the company as a "world class silver deposit," which will require more capital than Santa Ana.  The two deposits combined contain over 400 million ounces of silver in reserves and resources.

A September 2009 pre-feasibility study envisions a US$339 million project with an average annual production of 6.4 million ounces of production over a 27-year mine life, plus byproduct lead and zinc production.

The Corani feasibility study is scheduled to be completed in 2011. Mine production is expected to commence in 2014.

Both Corani and Santa Ana are located in the Department of Puno in Peru.

"At today’s silver price, Santa Ana will throw out about $100 million per year in free cash flow"

Now that Bear Creek is fully funded, financier seeks project for Troon Ventures

By Peter Kennedy

She doesn’t have a full time job, and claims to inhabit a very narrow area of expertise.

But that didn’t prevent Catherine McLeod-Seltzer from recently helping to raise $130 million for Bear Creek Mining Corp. (TSX: V.BCM, Stock Forum), a junior mining company which is focused on developing silver projects in Peru, a country she knows well from previous work in Latin America.

The Vancouver-based Bear Creek Chairman and mine financier is perhaps best known for co-founding Arequipa Resources Ltd., a company that was sold to Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX: T.ABX, Stock Forum) for $1.1 billion back in 1996.

When Stockhouse spoke to McLeod-Seltzer by phone this week, she was getting her personal life back in order after spending three of the past four weeks marketing Bear Creek’s latest financing in major cities in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

“When you raise $130 million in cash, it is important to keep shareholders appraised about what is going on,’’ she said.

Trading at $8.45 on Friday in a 52-week range of $3.51 and $9.42, Bear Creek has a market cap of $763.8 million, based on 90.4 million shares outstanding.

With about $150 million in the treasury, the company is positioned to start construction of its Santa Ana silver project in Peru, a $70 million heap leach silver mine which is expected to produce about 5 million ounces annually, starting in 2012.  Cash costs at the site are forecast to be about US$8.50 per ounce.

Bear Creek is also looking at the feasibility of building a second Peruvian mine, the Corani, which is expected to cost about $400 million to develop and will likely produce about 15 million ounces of silver annually. Production there is expected to start in 2014.

“At today’s silver price, Santa Ana will throw out about $100 million per year in free cash flow,’’ said McLeod-Seltzer.

It is cash flow that could enable Bear Creek to go it alone in developing Corani and quickly make the transition from being a pure exploration play to become a fully fledged mining company.

If everything goes according to plan, McLeod-Seltzer said the company will have the production stream to rival Pan American Silver Corp. (TSX: T.PAA, Stock Forum) and (NASDAQ: PAAS, Stock Forum), a company with silver mines in Peru, Mexico and Bolivia.

“There is nobody else in this space that has that kind of growth profile, with technically low risk projects, located in a politically secure, mining friendly jurisdiction.’’

But as Bear Creek moves to establish itself as a silver producer in Peru, McLeod-Seltzer is already looking ahead to her next mining play.

She is part of well known group of mining industry officials who are on the board of Troon Ventures Ltd. (TSX: V.TVN, Stock Forum), a shell company with about $10 million in cash.

McLeod-Seltzer and her fellow board members, including former Lundin Mining Corp. (TSX: T.LUN, Stock Forum) chief executive officer Colin Benner, are focused on finding a viable project to develop.

“We are pretty picky and have all the time in the world,’’ she said. “You can bet that with this group, when we acquire a project, it will be a good one.’’

A member of a prominent Vancouver mining family, McLeod-Seltzer is clearly well connected. Aside from being Chairman of Bear Creek, she is also Chairman and director of Pacific Rim Mining Corp. (TSX: T.PMU, Stock Forum), a lead director at Stornoway Diamond Corp. (TSX: T.SWY, Stock Forum) and a director of Kinross Gold Corp. (TSX: T.K, Stock Forum).

She is also a large shareholder of Lundin Group company Lucara Diamond Corp. (TSX: V.LUC, Stock Forum).

But she credits her success to teamwork and an ability to locate and work with proven mine finders such as Arequipa co-founder David Lowell and Bear Creek President Andrew Swarthout.

“I don’t run the day to day,’’ she said. “But I’m there as a resource, on the marketing, the strategy and the money raising side of things,’’ she said.

BEAR CREEK ANNOUNCES POSITIVE RESULTS FROM PHASE I DRILLING, TASSA SILVER-GOLD PROJECT, PERU

VANCOUVER, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Bear Creek Mining (TSX Venture: BCM / BVL: BCM) ("Bear Creek" or the "Company") is pleased to announce results for the fifteen (15) diamond drill holes (3677.4 meters) from its Phase I drill program. The positive initial results in conjunction with ongoing mapping and sampling on the property will be evaluated to determine the scope of Phase II drilling expected to start after the rainy season in Q2 2011. Tassa is located approximately 160 kilometers northwest and 230 kilometers south of the Company's Santa Ana and Corani silver deposits respectively. Santa Ana is on the permitting track following completion of a positive feasibility study and a feasibility study at Corani is expected in late 2011. Highlights of this news release are:

-- Drill hole T-4 returns 60 meters averaging 224.2 g/t Ag from 24 to 84 meters depth -- Drill hole T-2 returns 40 meters averaging 110.70 g/t Ag from 2 to 42 meters depth -- Drill hole T-6 returns 10 meters averaging 202 g/t Ag from 168 to 178 meters depth -- Drill hole T-11 returns 12 meters averaging 146.5 g/t Ag from 16 to 28 meters depth -- The wide space initial drilling only partially tests the large, mineralized diatreme breccia complex which measures 1.5 km by 800 meters -- Every drill hole to date has encountered elevated silver with occasional gold values up to 1.24 g/t over two-meters and various intervals with >0.1 g/t Au -- Numerous untested geochemical targets remain within the diatreme complex and sedimentary host rocks adjacent to the complex which are now being targeted by geologic mapping

Andrew Swarthout, President and CEO of Bear Creek, states "We are encouraged with the success rate including four drill holes containing significant silver mineralization in our first round of widely spaced drilling in this very large target area. These positive early stage results along with multi-phase nature of the volcanic diatreme complex at Tassa as well as the presence of similar host sediments to the nearby Chucapaca gold discovery of Goldfields and Buenaventura provide significant potential to discover additional higher grade silver and gold zones within the largely untested property position and highly metal-endowed geologic environment."

The Company's 100% controlled Tassa silver-gold prospect is located approximately 16 kms north-west from Chucapaca, currently under exploration by the Goldfields - Buenaventura joint venture where ,in a very similar geologic and geochemical setting, reported resources are 83.7 MT averaging 1.9 g/t Au and 8.2 g/t Ag.. Reportedly, the higher-grade gold mineralization at Chucapaca was "blind" and drilling initially returned silver-rich intercepts before the gold deposits were discovered.

The target at Tassa is a 1.5 km by 800 meters silver/gold anomaly where 852 rock chip samples (including trenches) to date average 30.71 g/t silver. An Induced Polarization survey defined several high chargeability anomalies, which seems to be related to increased fine black sulfides which contain elevated levels of silver and gold. To date, Phase I drilling has intersected mineralization contained within multiple phases of phreatic, hydrothermal, tectonic and phreatomagmatic breccias, strongly fractured rhyolitic volcanics, and brecciated sediments.

Phase II drilling, expected to commence in Q2, 2011, will consider testing deeper in the system where favorable sedimentary formations hosting the Chucapaca mineralization are believed to exist, the borders of the diatremes in contact with sediments, and new targets generated by mapping and soil and rock geochemical sampling over the northernmost three kms of the concessions where the mineralization may be open beneath outcropping Yura quartzite.

Mineragraphic and Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA) work establishes the main silver mineral as argentite associated with multiple mineralizing events. Seven recent bottle roll tests performed at ALS Chemex labs for cyanide extraction show Ag- Au recoveries above 70% where copper content is low; however, when copper exceeds 0.2% Cu (approximately 10% of the samples tested), recoveries tend to be lower. Earlier bottle roll tests on six samples resulted in recoveries of up to 85% silver and 95% gold (see News Release dated 7 January 2010). The high cyanide recoveries of silver and gold allow consideration of low-cost open pit mining and heap or vat leach recovery; however, the focus of the current program is to expand the higher-grade intercepts, discover higher gold to silver ratio mineralization, and develop additional targets within the district. Other News:

In other exploration news, four drill holes totaling 694 meters were completed at the Campanario project. Although numerous intervals of anomalous gold values were encountered, the results indicate that a bulk tonnage deposit is very unlikely. The Company's option agreement is being terminated and no further work is planned.

Consistent with the Company's aggressive generative exploration philosophy, several additional prospects in the portfolio are being evaluated for future drilling or acquisition.

The TSX Venture Exchange does not accept responsibility for the adequacy or accuracy of this release.

175 Postings, 4894 Tage Olli68"Stagnation": Warum?
