"In a crash that started late on Saturday evening and accelerated throughout the night, Bitcoin and the entire cryptocurrency space plunged the most in more than seven weeks, just days after hitting a new all time high ahead of the Coinbase IPO.Ethereum, the second-largest token, dropped almost 18% before paring losses. The market-wide crash has in $1.72 billion worth of long positions liquidated in just one hour alone. Expanding this range to 24-hours shows that 927,000 traders’ positions worth nearly $10 billion were wiped off, with $68.73 million being the largest liquidation so far according to FX street.

The crash appeared to coincide with an unconfirmed twitter report from a supposedly credible source that the Treasury could crack down on money laundering using cryptocurrencies.....".

- Bitcoin slipped 10.8% in the 24 hours to Sunday morning.

- It was the biggest single-day drop since February, Bloomberg reported.

- Reports attributed the drop to speculation the US Treasury may scrutinize digital currencies closer.

"....The $30 billion in Archegos derivatives that went up in smoke over a weekend is just the tip of the iceberg. The hedge fund Archegos lost everything and the normal uber-leveraged players Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, Nomura etc lost at least $30 billion.
These investment banks are making casino bets that they can’t afford to lose. What their boards and top management don’t realise or understand is that the traders, supported by easily manipulated risk managers, are betting the bank on a daily basis.
Most of these ludicrously high bets are in the derivatives market. The management doesn’t understand how they work or what the risks are and the account managers and traders can bet billions on a daily basis with no skin in the game but massive potential upside if nothing goes wrong....
The leverage is just too high and the bets totally out of proportion to the equity.
Just take the notorious Deutsche Bank (DB) that has outstanding derivatives of €37 trillion against total equity of €62 billion. Thus the derivatives position is 600X the equity.
Or to put it in a different way, the equity is 0.17% of the outstanding derivatives. So a loss of 0.2% on the derivatives will wipe the share capital and the bank out!"

Submitted by Joseph Carson, former chief economist at AllianceBernstein
https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/...s-more-market-reported-inflation
"The Fed has an inflation problem, but it's not the failure to meet an arbitrary target. The problem is that there is a significant separation between reported and market inflation. The uncoupling is not new and is a statistical issue. But it has become a thorny policy problem as easy money creates more market than reported inflation.
Price estimates for owner-occupied housing (which accounts for roughly one-quarter of the CPI) do not reflect market prices, nor are they based on data for owner-occupied homes. In the CPI, owner-occupied home costs are estimated based on what people could have earned had they rented their house. However, since the late 1990s, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has been using rents of primary residence as a proxy for the implied rent for owner-occupied housing, even though the markets' characteristics and price trends are fundamentally different...."

"It’s likely traders including Commodity Trading Advisers (CTAs) and crypto funds were at least partly behind the buildup of long Bitcoin futures in recent weeks, as well as the unwind in past days, they said.

“Over the past few days Bitcoin futures markets experienced a steep liquidation in a similar fashion to the middle of last February, middle of last January or the end of last November,” the strategists said. “Momentum signals will naturally decay from here for several months, given their still elevated level.”

De-Lists Crypto Exchange.  Deutsche Boerse said on Wednesday it would de-list the shares of cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase Global from its Xetra trading system and the Frankfurt stock exchange by end of Friday’s trading session.
“The reason for the de-listing is a missing reference data for these shares,” Deutsche Boerse said, adding the de-listing would apply until further notice.

The reaction in COIN is clearly sell first, think later...

Zelenski on Wednesday addressed the nation in a televised address in which he conjured up the specter of Russian troops on his nation’s eastern border. He asked and answered a number of rhetorical questions, among them: "Do Ukraine and its international partners demand that troops be withdrawn from our borders? Yes." The international partners in question are the US and its NATO allies and partners.
The keynote of his address was this: "Does Ukraine want a war? No. Is it ready for it? Yes. Will Ukraine stop fighting for peace through diplomacy? Never. Will Ukraine defend itself if it needs to?......
