Solar stocks are adding to yesterday's gains in a big way (TAN +3.6%) as oil prices (and oil/gas stocks) continue their recent rally: WTI crude is up $1.51 today to $51.08/barrel. The Nasdaq is close to breakeven. Also possibly helping solar firms: Canadian Solar's (CSIQ +21.2%) $265M deal to buy North American solar project developer Recurrent Energy from Sharp. The deal, which CSIQ estimates spells a $2.3B+ revenue opportunity, acts as a fresh vote of confidence for the downstream U.S. solar market in the wake of oil and natural gas' big declines.....

The transaction will further accelerate Canadian Solar’s hold in the business of ownership and development of solar power plants in North America.
Solar demand is rising on a global scale. Apart from strengthening its footprint in North America, Canadian Solar continues to expand its operations in China, Brazil, Japan and other emerging solar markets. These initiatives are helping the company to diversify its revenue stream. Although it faces intense competition from U.S-based solar majors.... Canadian Solar stands to gain immensely from its geographical diversity.
This Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) company has been posting strong results for the past several quarters. : Solar Stocks On The Fly: Canadian Solar Inc. ...
Shares of solar and renewable-energy companies were gaining sharply on Monday, in sympathy with higher conventional-energy stocks. If one sector is sensitive to market fall and lower crude oil prices, it is the alternative energy sector — including solar energy. As the price of crude oil gains, the demand for alternative forms of energy becomes much stronger. This is why oil and solar stocks, for example, often trade similarly. Analysts in recent years have debated whether alternative energy stocks are directly correlated to the price of crude oil. Some contend that pricier oil pushes renewable energy companies higher, as investors and consumers search for cheaper alternatives to fossil fuels.
Canadian Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:CSIQ), ReneSola Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:SOL) and Yingli Green Energy Hold. Co. Ltd. (ADR) (NYSE:YGE) all were up following oil prices higher.
