Medtronic backs fiscal Q1 estimate, sees better H2
CHICAGO, July 11 (Reuters) - Medtronic Inc. (NYSE:MDT - news), the world's largest maker of medical devices, said Wednesday it backed Wall Street's earnings per share estimates of 27 cents for its fiscal first quarter and $1.21 to $1.23 for fiscal 2002.

In a conference call with analysts, Minneapolis-based Medtronic said it expected sales to accelerate in the second half of its fiscal year as it reaps the benefits of new product introductions. Those introductions may possibly include its InSync implantable cardiac defibrillator, a device used to treat congestive heart failure.

On Tuesday, an advisory panel to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended Medtronic's InSync device for approval. If the product wins final approval, analysts say the device might be on the U.S. market by late in the third quarter, or early in the fourth quarter.

The impact of the euro and the yen, at today's spot rates, will likely trim more than 2 percent, or $125 million to $135 million from fiscal 2002 sales, the company said.
