Fuel Cells Could Offer Cheap Carbon-Dioxide Storage
A new type of fuel cell could make CO2 storage cheaper, but it could also prove to be a good way to pump more oil out of the ground.
By Kevin Bullis on May 24, 2013

Why It Matters
Carbon capture technology is far too expensive, nearly doubling the cost of power from coal plants.
The electrochemical reactions that occur inside fuel cells to generate electricity could provide a cheap way to selectively remove carbon dioxide from the exhaust gases of fossil-fuel power plants. The same reactions could concentrate the carbon dioxide, allowing it to be stored underground. The fuel cell could also be used to generate electricity, providing revenue to offset its cost.
Existing approaches to capturing carbon dioxide would nearly double the cost of electricity from a coal-fired power plant. And although using fuel cells instead would still increase the cost of electricity, that increase—based on early tests and calculations—might be one-third or less, says Shailesh Vora, a program manager at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory, which is helping to fund development of the technology with a $2.4 million grant. Researchers have considered using fuel cells for capturing carbon dioxide since at least the early 1990s, but the cells are cheaper now and they last longer, which could make them more practical.

Carbon capture technology, aimed at reducing emissions from power plants, might be key to addressing climate change, especially since fossil-fuel power is growing faster than power from low-carbon sources such as wind, solar, and nuclear (see “The Carbon Capture Conundrum,” “Will Carbon Capture Be Ready on Time?” and “The Enduring Technology of Coal”). Technology already exists that could capture carbon dioxide from exhaust gases, but it’s not being used at a large scale because it’s expensive, and because it uses steam that would otherwise be used to generate electricity, cutting a plant’s power production and revenue by about a third.
Vora says one advantage of the fuel cell approach is that while other carbon-capture technologies decrease the amount of electricity—and revenue—that a power plant generates, the use of fuel cells actually increases power production.
Not all fuel cells can be used to capture carbon dioxide. The process only works with molten carbonate fuel cells, a type made by the Bridgeport, Connecticut-based company FuelCell Energy, which sells them now to businesses and utilities for certain niche applications (see “Utility Dominion Buys Big into Fuel Cells”).
Molten carbonate fuel cells actually rely on carbon dioxide to operate. They take it in at one electrode. That carbon dioxide is then used to form ions that conduct current to the opposite electrode, where the carbon dioxide is emitted. Finally, it is pumped back to the first electrode to be reused, forming a complete loop.
To capture carbon dioxide, this loop would be interrupted. Instead of recycling carbon dioxide, the fuel cell would get the carbon dioxide it needs from the exhaust in a power plant. These exhaust gases contain about 5 to 15 percent carbon dioxide, diluted by other gases, mostly nitrogen. The fuel cell would selectively take up the carbon dioxide, use it to form ions, and then emit it in a much more concentrated stream at the opposite electrode. The gases emitted there would be about 70 percent carbon dioxide. Most of the rest is water vapor, which is easy to condense out, leaving an almost pure stream of carbon dioxide that can be pressurized and pumped underground for storage.
So far, the technology has been demonstrated at a small scale in a lab. The DOE funding will be used to build larger systems for capturing carbon dioxide. Several questions remain about how well it will work and how much it will cost. For one thing, exhaust gases from power plants are contaminated with sulfur and other pollutants that could interfere with the operation of a fuel cell. The costs will depend on how much the gases need to be cleaned up before they’re introduced into a fuel cell. The technology might work better at natural gas plants, which have cleaner exhaust than coal plants.
FuelCell Energy makes fuel cells that each generate only a few megawatts. It may need to make much bigger ones—capable of hundreds of megawatts—to capture large amounts of carbon dioxide at a power plant.
FuelCell Energy calculates that the process could capture carbon dioxide at between $20 and $30 per ton. At those rates, FuelCell might be able to sell it for use in greenhouses or for enhancing production at oil wells—it can be used to force out oil that otherwise would cling to pores inside an oil reservoir.
Fuel cells could, in fact, help address one key challenge to using carbon dioxide to enhance oil recovery. Usually, doing this requires pipelines to deliver the carbon dioxide to remote wells. But fuel cells could be used at the site of an oil well to generate electricity from gases that are produced along with the oil. That would produce carbon dioxide that could then be captured and piped underground to help free oil. Once the reservoir is depleted, the well could be capped, trapping carbon dioxide underground.
However, the net carbon dioxide emissions involved in using carbon dioxide to increase oil production aren’t clear—some of the advantage of trapping carbon dioxide underground would be offset by increased carbon dioxide emissions from the oil.

3656 Postings, 7333 Tage Bäcker33Carbon Capture Capability

The FuelCell Energy Direct FuelCell® (DFC®) is based on carbonate fuel cell technology. The fuel cell electrochemical reactions are supported by an electrolyte layer in which carbonate ions serve as the ion bridge that completes the electrical circuit. A side effect of this basic aspect of the technology is that carbon dioxide (CO2) introduced at the air electrode is converted to carbonate ions and transferred through the electrolyte layer to the fuel electrode, where it is converted back to CO2.

The result is that a DFC stack can be used as a carbon purification membrane – transferring CO2 from a dilute air stream to a more concentrated fuel exhaust stream. The concentrated CO2 can then be captured and used for industrial purposes, oil and gas extraction, or sequestered. This has the potential to solve a problem that the US Department of Energy (and other agencies around the world) has been struggling with for years, which is to develop and deploy an efficient and cost effective solution to concentrate and capture the CO2 in the exhaust of large coal or natural gas powerplants to avoid the harmful greenhouse effects caused by these emissions.

Conventional technologies that are being considered for carbon capture are expensive and have high power need, consuming a significant amount of the power output of the fossil fueled power plant they are trying to clean. FCE is developing a carbon capture system which uses DFC stacks as carbon concentration systems. Exhaust streams from fossil power or thermal systems are sent to the air intake of a DFC stack, which transfers the CO2 to the fuel stream, where it is much more concentrated and can be easily removed for sequestration or industrial use. Instead of consuming power like existing carbon capture systems, the DFC Carbon Capture system produces additional power and in an environmentally friendly manner that is virtually absent of pollutants. The production, rather than use of power, is critical to redu Less

Was meinst Du?

28 MAY 2013

The Association of Global Automakers and its member companies met with California lawmakers last week to discuss the automotive industry’s impact in the state and to highlight the need to support hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

Global Automakers and its members are pushing for the passage of the two bills, SB 11 and AB 8, which provide additional funding for the build-out of a hydrogen fuelling infrastructure in California. Currently the bills are pending in both the Assembly and the Senate, while discussions continue between legislators and manufacturers on the legislation.

"Our members continue to invest in technologies to reduce the environmental footprint of their vehicles, but that is only one part of the equation," said Global Automakers' Director of State Relations Gordon Fry . "To get consumers to buy green vehicles, they need to have the refuelling infrastructure necessary to support their purchases."

The Association of Global Automakers represents international motor vehicle manufacturers, original equipment suppliers, and other automotive-related trade associations.

"und" The Enduring Technology of Coal ").

Was macht FCEL einzigartig?

Key Hydrogen Technical Reference Now Available on Wiki Site

30 MAY 2013

As part of the Open Government initiative launched in the USA by the Obama administration, Sandia National Laboratories’ Technical Reference on Hydrogen Compatibility of Materials has made its debut on the Energy Dataset of OpenEnergyInfo, or OpenEI.

Many in the industry working to increase the competitiveness of clean hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) already consult the reference guide, which has been available on Sandia’s web page for several years. But, now, the information found in the publication is more widely available and easier to access.

“The Technical Reference is a valuable tool for the hydrogen delivery and storage industries,” said Sunita Satyapal, director of the Fuel Cell Technologies Office, the Department of Energy (DOE) office that has sponsored Sandia’s work on the Technical Reference. “It can help eliminate R&D redundancies by providing extensive compatibility data to the broader industry.  By sharing these crucial findings on OpenEI, the Technical Reference can increase the rate of progress towards overcoming the barriers of hydrogen delivery and storage and allow us to reach full commercialization of FCEVs sooner.”

The Technical Reference focuses on compatibility issues between hydrogen and other materials.  Due to their small size, hydrogen molecules can seep into materials at room temperature. This high rate of diffusion can promote embrittlement in some of those materials and some materials can be downselected depending on the application and conditions.

To help overcome this challenge, the Technical Reference provides detailed information of the effects of hydrogen on the materials that might be used in equipment for storing hydrogen and delivering it to fuel cell electric vehicles. Developed and updated by researchers at Sandia, the Technical Reference consolidates results of extensive review of reports and journal publications, as well as new research conducted by Sandia, on a range of compatibility issues that must be addressed to increase the cost-effectiveness and ease-of-use of hydrogen vehicles and their infrastructure.

Browsing the reference reveals the extent and depth of detail available. Concentrating on relatively low-cost and high-strength materials — including a variety of steel, aluminum, copper and nickel alloys, as well as non-metal polymers — the report provides data on potential high-priority impacts of hydrogen on such material properties as yield and tensile strengths, fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth rates.

“The reviewed and tested data in the Technical Reference can help industry target and develop components and systems with fewer hydrogen compatibility issues,” said Sandia researcher Brian Somerday, who, along with Sandia colleague Chris San Marchi was a principal developer of the report. “This could potentially accelerate the timetable for the hydrogen-fueled transportation system.”
