SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- EBay Inc. managed to swing a strong increase to its bottom line for the first quarter thanks to growth in its ticketing, payments and telecommunications units, while the company's core auction business continues to show signs of weakness.
The online auctioneer (EBAY: 32.18, +0.60, +1.9%) reported a 22% gain in net income for the quarter while overall revenue grew 24%, beating Wall Street's estimates. The company also issued a better forecast than expected for the second quarter as well as the remainder of the year.
For the first quarter, earnings came in at $459.7 million, or 34 cents a share, compared with earnings of $377.2 million or 27 cents a share for the same period last year.
The PayPal unit continue to shine, growing revenue 32% for the quarter.
Excluding charges related to stock options and acquisitions of intangible assets, eBay said that earnings for the quarter would have been $561.5 million, or 42 cents a share, for the first quarter. Analysts were expecting earnings of 39 cents a share for the period, according to estimates tabulated by FactSet Research.
Revenue for the quarter came in at $2.19 billion compared with $1.77 billion the previous year, beating expectations for $2.07 billion in revenue.
Shares of eBay, which have risen more than 20% in the weeks leading up to Wednesday's report, fell XX% in after-hours trading. The stock closed the regular session up almost 2% at $32.12.
Auctions still slow
The company's core marketplaces unit -- which accounts for about two-thirds of total revenue -- grew 19% from last year's first quarter. In a statement, eBay credited the growth to advertising and its classified-ads business as well as StubHub, a secondary ticketing service acquired early last year.

The core auction business, however, is still showing signs of weakness following a major shake-up to the company's fee structure earlier this year.
Gross merchandise volume -- the total dollar volume of goods sold over its site -- reached $16.04 billion, up just 12% from the same period last year. That's flat with the growth rate in the previous quarter and down from the 14% growth seen in last year's first quarter.
"We are seeing some positive early indicators based on our key initiatives, but there is still much work to be done," eBay Chief Financial Officer Bob Swan said in a statement.
By contrast, the company's PayPal unit continue to shine, growing revenue 32% to $582 million for the quarter.
Internet-telephony unit Skype grew its revenue by 61% during the quarter to come in at $126 million. EBay acquired it with much fanfare in 2005 for about $2.6 billion, but wrote off more than $1.4 billion of the acquisition last year as an impairment charge.
Outlook better than expected
For the second quarter, eBay said that it expects earnings to come in between 39 cents and 41 cents a share, excluding charges. Revenue is expected to come in between $2.1 billion and $2.15 billion.
Analysts had been expecting earnings of 39 cents a share on revenue of $2.1 billion for the period, according to FactSet data.
For the full year, eBay expects earnings between $1.70 and $1.75 a share compared to estimates of $1.66 a share by analysts. Revenue is expected to be between $8.7 billion and $9 billion, compared with expectations of $8.77 billion. End of Story

dass man wohl auch morgen nach DAX-Eröffnung nicht weiß wo er hinläuft.Eröffnung bei 6750-6775? Und dann? Dow-Nachlaufen auf Merrill Lynch warten und den Banklastigen Dax dann abstürzen sehen?  

als youngster sinn, wenn man das mag, viele kids meiner freunde und bekannten sind dort happy...ich als oldie hab die ganze welt gesehen,und da kehrt man nur noch an plätze zurück, die man nochmal sehen möchte...da ich im amiland  ein teil meines lebens berufsbedingt  verbracht habe......ist der reiz verflogen......  

da werden wohl in zukunft auch die preise für pferde deutlich ansteigen. gibt es da von den emis eigentlich ein paar zertifikate dafür. ;-)))

dass es gefährlich werden könnte da IBM und Ebay ja global aufgestellt sind und die weltwirtschaft ja noch brummt....

gleich mit den 6800er kasse machen. deutlich grüne asiaten würden das begünstigen.

Hältst du es evtl sogar für sinnvolMorgen vormittag Dax Shorts 6900 zu schmeissen und long zu gehen?

Die Shortquote war und ist meines wissens nach immer noch hoch und weitere eindeckungen könnten uns schon schneller als gedacht in obiges terrain vorstossen lassen oder wie siehst du das

Öl und dollar interessiert noch niemanden, Us earnings heut gut reingekommen, IBM outlook fürs Jahr positiv, Merril wird sich schwer tun die erwartungen zu untertreffen...also ich weiss nicht  

mal sehen was die sause wert ist. wenn wir stark aus der woche gehen, die wichtigen tge donnerstag und freitag also nichts dieses lifts abgeben, dann hätten wir einen grossen schritt gemacht... so bleibt es praktisch nur eine technische korrektur.

sich so schnell wendet. Schon möglich, dass die Bullen auf einer Ölspur ausrutschen.  

abräumt, dann werde ich shorts nachlegen, das nächste große Ziel im Dax liegt nämlich unten, ein Gap liegt noch zwischen 6895 und 6820 (das Islandgap im FDax), maximal darf der Dax bis 6830 bevor das Labeling geändert werden muss, vorher gibt es keinerlei Bedenken  

im moment konsolidieren wir und bilden eine range. viel hängt dann von den financials ab. die finanz- und immokrise hat die amis in die schieflage gebracht und auch nur die können den karren auch wieder aus dem dreck ziehen. wie man sieht, funktionieren andere segmente, die techs und co. ganz vernünftig, also rezessionsorgen doch ein wenig übertrieben? es kommt auf die höhe der weiteren abschreibungen von citibank & co an.

wir werden sehen. volatilität hat uns tradern ja noch nie geschadet ;)

dax bis 6830 kommt mir ziemlich nahe vor oder meintest du 6930  

war noch nicht so oft bei euch im chat
hab heute morgen mal auf die möglichkeit einer inversen S-H-S position im Dax hingewiesen
Wir haten in den US indeces im Nov die top formation mit targets bei dow 11500 and s&p bei 1250. beide wurden nahezu erreicht. jetzt haben wir im Dax die Situation auf der anderen Seite. möchte kurz aufs letzte Jahr März Mai hinweisen. Hohe Put/Call ratios und jeder schaut auf short positionen. Über 6850 ist 7060 nur eine Marke für eine reaktion auf dem weg zu 7600.

Ich frage mich nur ob wir nict mit den move unter 6200 ABC abgeschlossen haben, und jetzt beriets die 1. wave bei 6842 abgeschlossen haben und jetzt in die 3 einsteigen.
Das würde ja als target irgenwo um die 7200 setzen  

insbesondere weil GE es war, der letztes Jahr die Gewinnprognosen 2 x um läppige 0,5 oder so % außerordentlich hoch nahm, diesmal gabs keine Warnung, das sollte den Markt richtig auf den falschen Fuß erwischt haben, jetzt gerade mit INTC, J&J, JPM, IBM etc, erfährt der Markt genau das Gegenteil, er wird sehr positiv überrascht und nicht die Erwartungen wieder hoch, er hat dieder die rosa Brille auf (obgleich man klar anerkennen muss, daß die Zahlen wirklich gut waren, international aufgestellt eben), die nächste Enttäuschung wird aber wieder einen Rutsch erzeugen

MOB ist rot bei 6830, das 38er bei 6904 muss weiter zuwarten
