NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Fiber-optic network developer Ciena Corp. on Thursday posted improved fiscal third quarter profit and revenue that both edged Wall Street expectations, as the company said it expects to see continued growth despite a spending slowdown by telecom customers.

Ciena earned $58 million, or 17 cents a share, in the quarter ended July 31, excluding special items. That's up from $28.8 million, or 10 cents a share, earned on the same basis a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by earnings tracker First Call were looking for EPS of 16 cents.

Revenue at the company, which makes systems that increase the capacity of long-distance fiber-optic networks, rose to $458.1 million, nearly double the $233.3 million it posted in the year-earlier period. First Call's forecast was for sales of $455.4 million.

Ciena verdoppelt Gewinn im dritten Quartal

Der Telekommunikations-Ausrüster Ciena Corp. meldete am Donnerstag, dass sich sein operativer Gewinn im dritten Quartal verdoppelt hat, was auf eine starke Nachfrage nach seinen Produkten der nächsten Generation zurückzuführen ist.
Der Gewinn vor Sonderbelastungen stieg von 28,8 Mio. Dollar bzw. 10 Cents pro Aktie im Vorjahr auf nun 58 Mio. Dollar bzw. 17 Cents pro Aktie. Analysten hatten einen Gewinn von 16 Cents pro Aktie erwartet.

Der Umsatz im Quartal erhöhte sich von 233,3 Mio. Dollar im Vorjahr um 96 Prozent auf 458,1 Mio. Dollar.

Das Unternehmen rechnet weiterhin mit einem Gewinn von 72-75 Cents pro Aktie in 2001. Analysten gehen durchschnittlich von 73 Cents pro Aktie aus. In 2002 soll der Umsatz Ciena zufolge um 45-65 Prozent steigen.

While Ciena has been one of the few vendors to avoid the worst of the current industry slump, executives warned that fourth-quarter sales will fall 12 percent to 20 percent below the latest period. The company said per-share profit is expected to range from 2 cents to 7 cents, down from the Wall Street consensus estimate of 18 cents.

Ciena also lowered full-year sales and earnings projections. It now expects to earn 59 cents to 64 cents a share in 2001, down from an earlier target of 72 cents to 75 cents. Sales growth is expected to rise 85 percent to 90 percent, down from the previous range of 95 percent to 105 percent
