Five people died and one was injured yesterday when a crane collapsed at a Sinovel factory in China’s Gansu province.
The accident took place at 11pm as a sub-contractor – named as Ningxia Tianxin Construction and Development Co – was preparing to erect turbines at the company’s Jiuquan factory.
The arm of the crane broke off and fell during the operation, instantly crushing the five workers to death, according to information from the Jiuquan city government.
Another worker was hurt but his injuries are not life-threatening.
Recharge understands that the incident happened during a test erection of Sinovel's 5MW turbine on the factory site.
Sinovel is China’s largest turbine manufacturer. The company says it will reveal further information about the incident tomorrow.
An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
In January, reports emerged from China that three people were killed during the installation and testing of Sinovel turbines in the eastern province of Hebei.
Last year Sinovel blamed factors including strong winds and a fire for turbine collapses at a project in Liaoning province and at the Guazhou wind farm, also in Jiuquan.
