http://www.crmbuyer.com/story/37414.html And last month, as Commerce One got down to its last $700,000, the investors had had enough. Commerce One announced that it would sell all software, including its Web services products, to the investors. The technology would live on, but not the company that built it. The last month was the hardest for Hoffman, who had hoped until then that his company would buck the odds. "If we had been able to pull it off, it would have been a fabulous feat. That would have been a great resurrection," Hoffman said. "We had the product. We just couldn't get the capitalization and profits to make it happen."
Hoffman says he understands that former employees and investors are embittered. One of those employees, Evan Nakisher, who worked for Commerce One for two years, says the company survived so long not on the strength of Hoffman's leadership but because it had so much cash. "It was kind of like being on the Titanic. If the ship wasn't as big as it was, it would have sunk a lot sooner," Nakisher said.
But some of those who worked at his side say Hoffman's leadership is easy to question in hindsight. "If Commerce One had knocked it out of the park, it would be a $40 or $50 billion company now, not scratching its way along as a small software company like Ariba," said Mark McKenzie, a former Commerce One executive. "Is it better to swing for the fence and miss or is it better to bunt and still be in the game? It depends on what your ambition is."
Hoffman, who says he has fielded other offers but has no plans other than to focus on philanthropic activities for the next six months, has no qualms about the gamble he took. "You either live your life quietly, or shoot for the moon," Hoffman said. "For a while, we were there." Und Hofffmann ...sagt,dass er keine anderen Pläne habe als sich für die nächsten 6 Monate seinen philanthropischen Aktivitäten zu widmen na das ist doch sehr löblich |
